Gilbert Castellanos Quintet 6/9/12 Dizzy's San Diego

    Tribute to Lee Morgan

    Gilbert Castellanos Trumpet, Flugelhorn
    Teodross Avery Tenor Saxophone
    Joshua White Piano
    Mike Gurrola Bass
    Kevin Kanner Drums

With a set list of all Lee Morgan's masterpieces and an excellent array of musicians, this was a enjoyable and very good concert. Castellanos was more than prepared to swing and smoke in Lee Morgan's trumpet chair. He is a very good trumpet player that plays with technical knowledge and soul. The San Diego native Joshua White whom recently took second in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Piano Competition was something special. He took risks, yet maintained the tonal center and swing of the music. The 20 year bass player Mike Gurrola has a great future as he grooved hard with fellow young cat Kevin Kanner on drums. But, the cat who stood on a higher level that night was sax player Teodross Avery. He is a heavyweight musician, and really played at a stellar level with Lee Morgan's great songbook.
