Early this year I ordered Amina Aloui's ECM CD and decided that I also wanted to listen to her in a Moroccan context and acquired Amina Alaoui: Gharnati: En Concert as well. That's the one that I've been playing.

This Sunday I will be going to a Middle Eastern food festival at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Melkite Church in McLean, VA. Despite the “Greek” in the name, the church is Arabic--Syrian and Lebanese largely. They trace their apostolic roots to Peter and Paul in Antioch. Anyway, every Labor Day weekend they throw a massive party. This will be my fourth year going. The food is great--a whole roasted lamb, shawarma, Lebanese beer, this delicious heavily-herbed flatbread cooked on a metal dome in an open fire. Grrr, I’m making myself hungry. Oh yeah, the music. The music is also terrific and they get the girls in the congregation to dance. Its basically like the wedding at Cana. I love it.
Santa Rosa has two Orthodox churches, and hosts a Glendi each year, two week after yours, Monte -- lots of great Balkan music and dancing, with food from Greece, the Middle East and Eritrea (big local population) http://www.sonomauncorked.com/wine-c...endi-festival/
