Jon Irabagon Residency At Cornelia Street Café August 2-4
This August, Cornelia Street Café in New York will present a three-night residency by saxophonist/composer Jon Irabagon featuring three bands reflecting different sides of his musical personality. His trio with jazz elder statesmen Mark Helias (bass) and Barry Altschul (drums) will perform first on Thursday, August 2nd, followed by Altschul's own quartet, featuring Irabagon, Jake Salsow (tenor saxophone) and Joe Fonda (bass), on Friday, August 3rd. The residency concludes on Saturday, August 4th with Irabagon's new straight-ahead quartet featuring Ross Lossing (piano), Yasushi Nakamura (bass) and E.J. Strickland (drums). Each night will feature sets at 8:30 and 10:00 p.m.
The winner of the 2008 Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition, Irabagon has since topped the Rising Star Alto Saxophone category in the DownBeat Critics' Poll and been named one of Time Out New York's 25 New York City Jazz Icons. An integral member of such high-profile ensembles as Mostly Other People Do The Killing and the Mary Halvorson Quintet, as well as an established bandleader in his own right, he has worked in projects all over the musical spectrum. This fall, he'll launch his own record label, Irabbagast Records, to help document that diversity, beginning with releases by his I Don't Hear Nothin' But The Blues Trio with Mick Barr and Mike Pride and a new working quintet featuring Ralph Alessi, Jacob Sacks, John Hébert and Tom Rainey.
