Lebron putting on an amazing display of all-around basketball early in 3rd quarter to build a lead for US over Argentina. USA was up by only one at the half. Lebron had to sit when he got his 4th foul (on a ?able call) and Kobe tried to blow a big lead by giving up the ball with ridiculously going one on five several times, but Durant's hot shooting from other time zones build lead back up to about 20. In case anyone didn't notice, Lebron's great passes got KD in his rhythm. And once Durant has his shooting rhythm.......

As for the feat of delivering four consecutive race wins at the start of her fleet series – nothing. And for the fact that after eight of those ten races, she was the overall leader of her class – again, nada.

One of the local stories I've been tracking came to an end today
Kim Conley of Santa Rosa ran a PR and made the Olympic A standard for the 5K at the trials, and she ran five seconds faster than that this morning in her heat, but it was only good enough for 12th in her heat and she won't move on
Great race by the American Leonel Manzano to take silver in the men's 1500!
Always the shortest guy in every heat and every race, he has a way of staying in contention and seems to have a great finish among all the tall, super long legged competitors.
Another guy who seems to race with guile and his head; was very sorry to see fellow USA runner Matthew Centrowitz just get edged out for third by a mere .03

I'm bailing after a half-hour of this incoherent rambling and posturing, climaxed by the great Kenneth Branagh delivering a totally off-key reading of one of Caliban's speeches delivered as though he were a Dickensian lawyer -- 'when I waked/ I cried to dream again'
The entire thing was a bore and very British.
He was supposed to be Isambard Kingdom Brunel. None of us sitting there had any idea. Thankfully my youngest brother (he's only seven) asked Pops why they were using Lincoln in a English Olympics. haha
I think they used this for the pose and book.
I can understand not playing the Sex Pistols' God Save the Queen (which they played a few seconds of in the opening film) with the Queen (who was bored out of her mind throughout.) sitting there....but how do you not play London Calling (at the London Olympics) except for a few seconds in the opening film?

I am a bit disappointed that Lolo Jones did not get at least a bronze. I am a bit pissed that the AustraIian prevented her being on the podium with Dawn Harper and Kellie Wells. I kinda like her.
As a rule I don't like the artistic sports much but I enjoy women's diving. I even developed a little crush
WATERFUGGINPOLO GOLD for US Women!!! Had ALL that ASS from DAY ONE!!! Go USA!!
Yeah, motherfucker better be funnin' with us all - I defy any of our current crop of so called comedian-cum-social commentators to intentionally produce something quite one half as ludicrous as the above.

The most heroic performance of the games isn't getting much ink, but a big shout-out to Manteo Mitchell who broke his leg during the opening leg of the 4x400 relay, and continued sprinting fast enough to keep the USA in contention and progressing to the finals
"Three days ago I was going up the stairs, and I kind of missed one and landed awkwardly. I got treatment, and I was fine. I did workouts, and when I warmed up today I felt really well. I felt I could go 44 (seconds)-low. I got out pretty slow, but I picked it up and when I got to the 100-meter mark it felt weird. I was thinking I just didn't feel right. As soon as I took the first step past the 200-meter mark, I felt it break. I heard it. I even put out a little war cry, but the crowd was so loud you couldn't hear it. I wanted to just lie down. It felt like somebody literally just snapped my leg in half.
"I knew if I finished strong we could still get it (the baton) around. I saw (teammate) Josh Mance motioning me in for me to hand it off to him, which lifted me. I didn't want to let those three guys down, or the team down, so I just ran on it. It hurt so bad. I'm pretty amazed that I still split 45 seconds on a broken leg."
Max Siegel, the CEO of USATF, called Manteo "an inspiration and a hero for his teammates. Without his courage and determination to finish, Team USA would not be at the starting line in the final. The team has rallied around him and we are all looking forward to the final days of competition."

Quite right, they should throw the rest of the competitions so as not to make the hosts feel worse about themselves than they already do
A little obtuse, even for you m'man. My point is simply - Ireland actually got a gold! Hurray! That's a rare and remarkable thing.
Certainly, one of the 'grand narratives' of the Olympics is the usual one - the U.S. and China have their usual pissing match about who gets the most gold medals (and it's interesting to compare the current SQ in this regard to that which obtained previously - albeit a far more emotionally/politically fraught perennial contest against the U.S.S.R. or their satellites)

My apologies Steve, can you explain what you mean here? I'm assuming you're not mixing up Ireland with GB, so I'm kind of confused as to what - if any - sense your post actually makes.

Actually I was, and I congratulate Ireland on their medal
But we both know that wasn't the part of your post I was responding to
Thank you Steve - these little triumphs matter a lot. Re the geopolitical mixup - well I got wider exposure to that particular lacunae in Canada last year.
As for the 'we both know' in your reply - I don't actually. The only reason I'm aware of Katie Taylor's achievement is because it's been doolally land in the media here for the last week about it - a sociocultural sensation, no less.
So, to address the second part of your reply I googled 'olympic medal standings' and I see that GB now stand third. I'm going to thereby take a stab at interpreting your sentiments and reckon that the Brits are unduly crowing about their successes, in a disgustingly self satisfied fashion?

You can take some national pride in the gold medal and new world record over 8oo m by David Rudisha, sheesh. Fabulous race. World records over this distance almost never get broken without a pacemaker. Rudisha is coached and trained by Irish priest Colm O'Connell.

Congratulations to him! And thanks for that tidbit of info Uli! Lol - it does sound rather surreal - (could his coach's name be more Gaelic?). I surmise that his trainer must have passed on the power of mortification as an aid to sustain him through the harsh times of his training.
Indeed, when I recall how my school librarian (a Jesuit, Brother Crow) expired after his umpteenth dip - by this stage a nonagenarian - into the icy Atlantic off Blackrock, Salthill (daily, rain, shine or snow since a short little while after the Easter Rising) I can perhaps sympathise for David as well as congratulate him. Lord knows what he suffered for this!
