i was sitting in a dentist's chair right next door to the hospital where he died. actually heard about it from a phonecall from Herbie H.'s wife who i was meeting for dinner.
I don't remember where I was when I first found out but I remember listening to KJAZ all that day in shock. I wonder where he would have explored musically had had he not left so soon. His commentary on today's music scene likely would have been, ah, interesting.
I do remember the Miles Davis memorial broadcast from WKCR, Columbia University....played everything Miles ever recorded round the clock consecutively took almost 6 days if I remember correctly.....I listened to many, many hours of it.
Miles died the day of the old John Coltrane Memorial Concert at Berklee and I had heard about it earlier. It was obvious that a majority of people hadn't heard though. When they announced it at the start of the concert, the crowd was stunned.
Luckily, Miles' Sextet was the headliner on the very first live jazz concert I heard, in 1962. What unforgettable memories I have of that event. And, Miles was only 35 at the time. Yeow.
