Joel Zelnik Trio in Concert "My Bill Evans-a personal conversation"
The Joel Zelnik Trio will be appearing at The Puffin Cultural Forum on Saturday, October 27, at 8:00 PM with the program, “My Bill Evans – a personal conversation”, which is based on the dialogues between Joel Zelnik and Bill Evans at the “Village Gate” during the mid-1960’s. The Puffin is located at 20 Puffin Way, in Teaneck, NJ. Telephone: 201-836-3400. Admission is a $10 donation.
The Joel Zelnik Trio is comprised of Joel Zelnik – Piano, Brian Glassman – Bass, and David Cox – Percussion. Their performance pays tribute to Bill Evans in three ways: They play some of his signature tunes, play songs he may have considered, and ones that Joel performs with his influence.
Joel had the great fortune of playing at the Top of the Gate in NYC during the mid 60’s, on Monday nights with his army buddy, dear friend, and great singer Stan Edwards. It was on one of those Mondays they split sets with the Bill Evans Trio, and his greatness has stayed with Joel right up to the present. Bill said to Joel,”as a musician, it’s not what you play, but how you play it.” Joel has lived that in his own piano playing no matter what style or circumstance.
Bill had a great sense of humor, laughing about their mutual experiences in New Jersey, where both of us grew up. For Joel, no one has ever touched him musically and emotionally like Bill, and he laments “the noise that passes for so much of so called jazz that permeates the airwaves today. Bill wore his inner feelings in his music, no “hey man I’m hip, see my toolbox full of well rehearsed stuff.” He was, and is all that represents timeless art.
Jazz great Dr. Billy Taylor, was the first to give air play to Joel’s first jazz album, “MOVE”, which was reissued in Japan. A contemporary of Bill Evans, Joel has entertained 5 presidents, has been a pianist/bandleader for thousands of events, and has performed at concert venues in New York, Atlantic City, Las Vegas, Japan and Greece. NYC venues include: Windows On The World and The Rainbow Room. He has recorded four CD’s and also holds an M.A. (from Rutgers University). His latest recording, “Live At Steinway Piano Gallery” was released in Japan. www.joelzelnik.com
