    John Tchicai RIP

Thought I would see this posted, so I guess I'm the bearer of the news...never saw him perform.

I never saw him either; not for lack of wanting to. RIP

I was fortunate to see him perform twice. He was involved in so many incredible recordings....in some cases historic recordings.

How many people have played with both John Coltrane and John Lennon?

Thank you for all the enjoyable music. Be well, Mr. Tchicai.

    John Tchicai

He was a good friend over the past decades; I first heard him in NYC in '64. Some of my poems were performed by John, including one (Track 7) on his recent Franco Ferguson-John Tchicai Big Band LIVE AT MORO FESTIVAL CD. In a recent letter (a few months ago) he sounded so upbeat/happy; news of his coma and now his death was a shock.

Sorry for the loss of your friend David.

I still look around for you on the grounds at Monterey, and did run into some of your old music and concert going running mates.

Another huge loss for the Jazz community, to be sure.

    Rest in peace, my friend.

Plus I was fortunate to see the wonderful saxophonist a little over 10 years ago at the Knitting Factory with Paul Smoker, Adam Lane (I think?) and the *great* Barry Altschul on drums.

great set, great hazy memory - nice to have seen him live when I missed so many others...

I am thrilled to say that I saw him in Adam Lane's great band in October, 2002 with Barry Altschul and Paul Smoker as well.

It really was a meeting of giants.

    rest in peace, John.

Kinda freaky, too. I broke out Ascension for the first time in likely 6-7 years last week.
