    An Issue with "Last Post"

I've noticed lately that I sometimes can't get to the "last post" link because the poster's name is too long for the link to show on my screen. See "Square Dance Calling Steve" at the Shameless Self-Promotion thread. So, I have to go to the first post in the thread and then go to the last page in the thread and then go to the last post in the last page to get to SqD. Is that fixable?

Blue Train has mentioned having the same issue several times. Not an issue for me. Odd.

Maybe now that Walto has mentioned it....someone will look into it. I have only mentioned it 10,000 times. Once again. It only happens for me if I use the New Posts & Today's posts features. If you go directly into the individual forums the last post arrow is there and so also is his full handle.

Anyway, Walto this is what I now do to cut down on clicks. Instead of clicking on the thread which can lead to several clicks to get to the last page depending on how long the thread happens to be and then having to scroll down to the last post.

I click on the forum it's in, which you will see at the right next to the thread. In the forum the thread is in you should see the last post arrow and you can click on that.

I haven't experienced this problem, even after experimenting with each of the several styles available after the update to the JC software.

I wonder if it's a factor of screen size. The icon for the last post is quite small and when I'm using our Samsung netbook which has a small screen, I don't see all of the characters in SqDSteve's name but can still select the Last Post icon. Text size would (obviously) also influence how many characters will fit into a given space.

I would say it isn't. Works just as well on both my 21" iMac, and my 9" iPad.

Haven't tried it on my 3.5" iPod, but there are already far greater issues when using a screen that small.

I thought we had covered this already. My apologies if I'm imagining that.

This can be an issue if you use a large degree of zoom in your browser. That's the only way I can replicate the problem. The "larger text" versions of each theme are specifically set up so that the text you need to read (i.e. post content) should be clear and large enough, but some of the supplementary 'meta' information that may be less useful remains smaller so the layout should have the best chance of not breaking. I'm viewing on a 15" laptop and have to zoom to 250% to have the "Next Post" icon disappear next to one of SquareDanceCallingSteve's post.

    Bryan:

I am not "zooming" anything. Not wanting to open an old wound, but there are many members who apparently "zoom" and they don't have the same problems.

Once again. As I said before: "Jean Francois Réveillard" also has 24 characters if you count the spaces. No problem with him." I also turned off every add-on I use and went to default settings. It didn't matter. It's only Steve.

It happens on my Playbook browser with no zoom.

OH!!! I see what everybody is saying now. I never use that, but always use the "next post" icon next to the thread name.

But yes, the "last post" "arrow" doesn't show up in certain regards.

    Interesting.

Thanks. I didn't realize you'd already brought this up--sorry. I don't read very many threads...

I've never used that "last post" link either. I always start with "New Posts." From there, if I want to go to the end of a thread I click on the last page of the thread and scroll down.

I guess I don't understand wanting to click to the last post. What if their are unread posts before that one?

You can scroll up. It's quicker that way than the way Tom is using for example.

Yeah, but why bother scrolling up when one click will take you right to it?

While you're clicking and scrolling, I'm already there.

    You're "already there"? Where?

It's impossible to know the last post you read on a given thread, even when we click on New Posts, so there isn't a one-click solution. There is always a bit of scrolling involved. Sometimes, it also involves going back one or more pages to catch up with all of the posts on a thread, especially if it's gotten very active.

One click and you're already there and no scrolling is needed? How do you work this magic?

    As in, huh?

    It's pretty easy, gents.

If you're in the "new posts" section, you just click the "down" immediately left of the thread title. It will take you to the first unread post of that particular thread.

I'm not sure that's the answer, Scott. I don't think that BT was looking for the first unread post in a particular thread when he posted his frustrating scenario.

Are you talking about Subscriptions? If so, that's a completely different animal.

Also, it's not always within New Posts where there are threads you're interested in viewing, so the Last Post function/icon is very useful. That's why this thread was created.

    [CLASP]!

Thank you, Scott. I had never noticed that "down" icon. Perfect.

And when you enter a particular forum, the icon is there for all threads containing new posts.

As for the "last post" link sometimes not being available, it says something about our frantic, computer-driven lives that the amount of time it takes to get to that last post in another way--generously estimated, perhaps two seconds--is enough to be considered a major annoyance.

    That's cool.

I guess I just don't understand the concept. If you've already read the entire thread I don't understand the need to jump to the last post.
