I love me some turkey but mostly because of tradition. Whenever Joanne and I host Thanksgiving I always cook a turkey in the traditional way. However, I also always add several other dishes to the mix. These dishes can include but are not limited to a turducken, a porchetta or, as we say where I'm from, porketta. I've also been known to whip up a big tray of kielbasa and sauerkraut or a ham. The sides go on ad infinitum. Think eggplant parmesan, broccoli rabe, perogies or maybe a lasagna or sausage and peppers. Having said all that, we will be doing Thanksgiving at my sister-in-law's house this year. That means we can go and enjoy being with the extended family down here in Connecticut and then we will be able to bug out to Vermont that evening to enjoy the remainder of the holiday weekend up north. Life is good.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone here on Jazz Corner. If you are crazy enough to be traveling please be careful. I was driving back from my studio last night and a guy passed me across a double line while I was making a left turn. There were two other accidents on the way home.

Off to an awkward t-giving with an "ex-sister-in-law" down in Ossining. But it does give us the chance to walk around the (no doubt deserted) Fordham and Barnard campuses on Friday.

Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday. It's a semi-religious, semi patriotic event but it is really about food. Yep, there's the having to be in the same building with some relatives who you aren't crazy about, but wotthehell, it's about maximum intake of calories.

So here'e hoping all of you weight 9 pounds more on Friday.

No, 33 would still be a kid. The next youngest after 32 in our group was 56.

Slightly amusing to hilarious Thanksgiving story, depending on your perspective. My niece, Allison decided to make a punch which included mulled cider. The idea was to put the heated cider in a crockpot, which would then be ladled into cups and then one would pour pumpkin pie flavored vodka into the cups and enjoy a "Thanksgiving themed" holiday cocktail. Needless to say, I steered clear of that dopey idea. Others were not dissuaded.

Everyone that tried the cider/pumpkin pie vodka cocktail seemed to enjoy it. When it came time to replenish the mulled cider Allison dutifully set a sauce pan on the stove to preheat the cider before pouring it into the crockpot. When she went to the stove to retrieve the sauce pan of cider she inadvertently picked up a similar looking saucepan that contained turkey gravy whereupon she dumped said saucepan of gravy into the crockpot. Funny how similar turkey gravy and mulled cider look, apparently.

However, that didn't deter a certain brother-in-law who dipped the ladle and poured the liquid into his cup and then added a modest amount of the vodka and continued to imbibe unaware that he was quaffing vodka laced turkey gravy until another relative asked for a taste. After gagging she asked him what he was drinking.

It was at that point that Allison's mother asked where her turkey gravy had gone and why was a sauce pan of simmering cider taking up valuable space on her stove.

Later, brother-in-law swore that the turkey gravy and vodka cocktail wasn't half bad.
