    Valerie,

Would you be so kind as to re-post the line-up for the two days at the Playboy?

    I thank you in advance.

    Got the tickets today!

I owe a HUGE "thank you" to Jean-Marie at Playboy [and maybe even Valerie?] for helping me through the UPS non-delivery and subsequent missed deadlines.

    25th Annual, here I come ;-)

Didn't have a hand in that at all, Tim!! Remember, we "crossed wires" in my attempt to help you with tickets. Will plan though on seeing you there!

The lineup this year is not too impressive, IMO.

Maybe...but it is an annual event not to be missed, IMHO.

BTW, see you there, Valerie ;-)

The only lineup change that I've seen is that King Sunny Ade is being replaced by Ozomatli. They're both wonderful groups, IMO.

Also, I think this will be the first year that they will have two big screens, so I guess I can leave my binoculars at home!

Here's the cut-and-paste of an e-mail I sent to my musician friend:

The Playboy was actually quite good this year, surprisingly enough. The line-up seemed a bit weak on the surface, but turned out some fine performances.Boz Scaggs, for example, was the biggest surprise; he did a Straight Ahead Jazz set [though mostly ballads] that was flat out amazing for an ex-rocker. Lizz Wright was very nice and Dave Holland's Quintet was absolutely superb in his treatment of BeBop and Hard Bop...solid bass work, IMHO. Daniela Mercury, though scantily clad, belted out some great Brazilian Jazz, but the biggest surprise on Saturday were the Blind Boys of Alabama...not Jazz, but some seriously good Blues and just plain old fashioned Sunday-go-to-meettin' chruch music. Wow. Poncho Sanchez was the closer and, well, what can I say? The man is the best conga player since Mongo Santamaria.[BTW, a former student of mine has played on percussion with him from time to time, too] Boney James was, well, let's just say he's not my cup o'tea...though his band was fantastic!

Sunday was just as good with Dave Brubeck [at age 82] still cranking it out ;-) Roy Haynes [who I got to meet very briefly; I have a friend in the Boxes] put on a very nice Straight Ahead set. Except for the Rap [ugh] Ozamalti was just some seriously high energy stuff. Al Jarreau did some of his scat and pretty much jammed all night.

This and sitting with Valerie [whose graciousness and sophisticated demenor are without peer] and her Jazz astute and wonderfully musically wise friends were the highlight of this 25th Playboy ;-)

And to Jean-Marie: Thank you...thank you from the very bottom of my heart. You are a peach ;-)
