The Dave Burrell is indeed pretty nifty. The only other Burrell I have is one of the duets with David Murray, which is also excellent, & the twofer LP of High Won High Two. Nice to hear more from a guy who seems not to have recorded that much.

A tip: the new John Hagen disc is excellent (Hagen the saxophonist, not the cellist). Was sent it by Cadence for a Flying Blind test & it's the first F.B. disc I've really got a lot out of. (Bob Rusch i.d.'d it for me after I handed in copy.) Can't find much info about it yet but I take it it's the disc listed on the Cadence site as Segments, with Mark Dresser, Gerry Hemingway & Denman Maroney (& I gather from a comment of Bob's that there's a second drummer too). Fans of the Tony Malaby disc Adobe might go for this one, though it's altogether feistier stuff.

Nate, the recordings to pick up for Burrell are:

    - The Hat Art solo "Windward Passages," a great, roiling/introspective set in a similar vein to the new trio

    - "Echos" on BYG which is a real scorcher. One of my favorite BYGs and one that has been reissued recently on Sunspot.

I don't mind as long as I'm given credit!

Of the titles you list, I've only head Dave Burrell's -- it's quite nice. He's been gigging a bit more actively in Philadelphia lately; I'm hoping to catch one of his shows this summer.

I've had "Dream Dancing" on order for weeks now from Amazon. No sign of it yet. If you're a Vache fan, as am I, I found a batch of Vache recorded in England on Zephyr available in this country from Cadence.

    Paul Bley - Circles (fantasyjazz)

with Dick Youngstein, Glenn Moore, Frank Tusa, Steve Haas, Bobby Moses, Dave Holland, and Barry Altschul

Bley on RMI electric piano, grand piano and synthesizer.

Is there anyone familiar with Bley's electronic ventures and has some opinion about it?

    Thanks

Leo just released an 4-CD, 4.5 hour set by Anthony Braxton, "23 Standards (Quartet) 2003," with Kevin O'Neill on guitar ("the most remarkable guitarist to emerge in a decade" reads the Leo copy), Kevin Norton on percussion, and Andy Elau on Bass, live performances. Limited edition of 1000, £ 35.

Anybody have a clue as to how these are?

Crawjo, I haven't heard anything official but I'd be surprised if it were less than $120. Revenant's nice packaging usually means high dollar. I'm not sure what their fairly recent Charley Patton box cost, but I'd bet that's a good indication.

Like sqd, I'm looking forward to Braxton's (quartet) 4 cd box from Leo:23 Standards. Thinking of ordering it direct from Leo, as their email projected around 2 months for it to hit USA. It's been available for over a month in Europe. Has anyone heard it? I very much enjoy the standards quartet's studio release on CIMP, and espec. the live cd on Barking Hoop.

Don't know whether this one has been mentioned:

Basra / Pete La Roca [Sims]
    (Blue Note 84205/EMI TOCJ-4205)

    1. Malaguena (E.Lecuona)
    2. Candu (P.La Roca)
    3. Tears Come from Heaven (P.La Roca)
    4. Basra (P.La Roca)
    5. Lazy Afternoon (Latouche/Moross)
    6. Eiderdown (S.Swallow)

    Pete La Roca / ds
    Joe Henderson / ts
    Steve Kuhn / p
    Steve Swallow / b

    recorded May 19, 1965
at the Van Gelder Studios, NJ
    engineered by Rudy Van Gelder
    produced by Alfred Lion

It's been available here and there for outrageous sums, but I read on another jazz board that it's due to be reissued as an RVG in February or March 2005. I've never heard it, but I've seen nothing but praise for it.

    This from the DMG website:

GRACHAN MONCUR III ENSEMBLE - Exploration (Capri 74068) Featuring the legendary Grachan Moncur III & Dave Woodley on trombones, Billy Harper on tenor sax, Gary Bartz on alto sax, Tim Hagans on trumpet, John Clark on french horn, Gary Smulyan on baritone sax, Ray Drummond on bass and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Jeez, what an amazing line-up! Mr. Moncur recorded two great albums for Blue Note in the sixties, two more gems for BYG, one for JCOA and then seemed to have disappeared. In the last decade he resurfaced with Roswell Rudd & Archie Shepp, Charles Tolliver's Legacy Band and for a few projects with William Parker. A review copy is on its way, but I can't imagine this being anything other than great.
    CD for $15

Yes, this should be good as I keep hearing how the earlier release was really not representative of the high level at which the band operated (as I think it was culled from performance very early on in their tours?). And many others, I did have list but lord knows where it is.

    Carnegie.

By Perez muted, do you mean you don't like his piano playing? If you're referring to the vocalizations, that's Blade.
