    NHL Playoffs

For the three of us who actually follow along...

The MIGHTY DUCKS, (Hockey) Team of Destiny For the New Millenium, beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in TRIPLE-overtime. Duck goalie, J.S. Giguere, 378 saves (okay, 62 saves).

Duck Captain Paul Kariya snaps a 16-game goal drought and puts home the game winner. It's GREAT to be a Duck fan!

Cool, I love the Ducks. Mainly because they have the best backup-goalkeeper in the league: Martin Gerber !! I hope he gets some playing time in the playoffs. Togh Giguere did a good job so far.

I'd also like to see the Avalanches and Islanders win. And the Leafs !

BTW, Where is Don ? The Leaf's won their first match and no posting from Cannuck Don yet ???

    .

I'm here..Nice to see the Leafs win the first one ,but they didn't deserve the win.Belfour was the main reason for the victory.Something like 35,38 shots against the Leafs and I think 18 or 19 against the Flyers, plus lost Tucker and Antropov to injuries.Nick A. bone broken in foot blocking a shot to be out maybe 3 ,4 weeks, and Darcy T. out for a bit also.Leafs got to start playing better and stay out of the penalty box or else they will be early at the golf course this year.Play to-night.Flyers are going to come out storming to avenge the lose. The Vancouver series is a good one.Rough and mean.Games are too far apart though. In the old days you played 2 nights in a row then 1 day for travel ,then another 2 in a row.Leafs played Wed..then to-night Friday. When this is all over it will be June .

I'll say it: Go Ducks! F*ck the Red Wings.

The ultimate psychological conflict for me would be a Bruins/Stars Stanley Cup. I've followed the Bruins for years (first love), but call myself a drooling Stars fan. Luckily the odds are far pitted against such a matching.

Bruins need to POUND New Jersey tonight and keep the pressure on MartAHn Brodeur. Hopefully Joe Thornton will be on.

    Stars win tonight. A given.

Hi Don! Good game by your Leafs the other night. I got a little worried when the Flyers tied it up at 3 but then Renberg came up big on that re-direction. Went to the Bolts game last night with my son. SHUTOUT! Should have stayed home! The playoffs are definitely another season, right Wings, Canucks, Avs and SENATORS!

Gerber has the most vocal fan contingent at the Pond as well. There've been a few games where I've heard Swedish singalongs wafting from the rafters.

Yeah, but almost all of the favorites lost in Game 1. I think the Devils are the only exception. Wings have been strong over the second half, have integrated all the new pieces with the old, and will come back to win the series. Then Colorado and Dallas...

What's it like to be a fan of a team named after an old Michael J. Fox kiddie movie??

Aehm..... Gerber has played in Sweden but he's from Switzerland. He might still be poular in Sweden.

The only thing I'd be happy about, if the Ducks (or the Avs) fail in the 1st round: We get our two Top-Keepers back for the World-Championship in Finland !

Whoops! Sorry, mean Suisse. In any event, they're a fun bunch.

And I'm afraid you can't have Gerber back. We'll be needing him. ;-)

Hi Slurpy..Hope you are all right and healthy.Going to be hard to beat the Flyers.Goaltending will prevail which Leafs have an edge in.Guys like Molgilny,Sundin,Nolan have to play at a high level every game through the playoffs if we have any chance at all.
The first game wasn't to nasty by either team, but as the playoffs go on ,I feel there is going to be some mean stuff happening on the ice by both teams.Flyers are big and tough and I think there real colours will show in tonights game.I hope they have been feeding Domi raw meat the last few days Larauque was running rampid in the last game.

Thanks, Don. Hope you and yours are well too. Yea, tonight's game is gonna be ugly. The Flyers WONT want to go do 0-2, especially at home. Should be fun watching. Good luck! I go to perhaps my last Lightning game of the season tomorrow. Hope not tho...

The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, TEAM OF DESTINY FOR THE *NEW* MILLENNIUM take a 2-0 series lead on the Detroit Red Wings with a 3-2 win. (Soon to be Conn Smythe winner) J.S. Giguere came up big again. Waiver Pick-Up Of The Year Jason Krog tied it up and Trade Deadline Pick-Up Of The Year Steve Thomas scored the game-winning goal.

Sucks to be a Red Wings fan!

    Two down, fourteen to go!

My team stunk last night.Flyers manhandled the Leafs.Won the battle in the corners and in front of the net and at centre ice.Out shot the Leafs again by high numbers. The Leafs were outplayed in every category.Below is the record for both teams during the reg. season.By looking at that the Leafs should have a big edge but so far none at all. Playoffs are a dif.story.Flyers ,big ,strong.

    Flyers by the Numbers.

.Record: 45-20-13-4 (107 points), 2nd in Atlantic Division,
    4th in Eastern Conference.

Offence: 211 Goals For, 17th in NHL.

Defence: 166 Goals Against, T-1st in NHL.

    Powerplay: 14.3% (21st in NHL).

    Penalty-killing: 85.2% (9th in NHL).

The Maple Leafs by the Numbers

Record: 44-28-7-3 (98 points), 2nd in Northeast Division,
    5th in Eastern Conference.

Offence: 236 Goals For, 8th in NHL.

Defence: 208 Goals Against, T-10th in NHL.

    Powerplay: 17.5% (11th in NHL).

    Penalty-killing: 86.8% (3rd in NHL).

    More Statistics

For a complete statistical look at this series.

The Experts from Toronto's TSN .

Bob McKenzie: This could be called the End of the World series because, for the team that loses, that's what it's going to be. It's a great series in terms of matchups. Start with Leafs goaltender Ed Belfour, who had two shutouts in three starts against the Flyers this season. While Belfour is at the top of his game, Roman Cechmanek's numbers were actually better this year. But Belfour's experience should be a big plus for the Leafs. At the end of the day, if you had to pick between Belfour and Cechmanek for the playoffs, I'd take Belfour. As for the coaches, Pat Quinn doesn't like matching lines, but Ken Hitchcock loves it. In the end, there's not much to pick between these two teams. Injuries, though, could be a factor for Toronto.

Gord Miller: Remember that Cechmanek was great in the playoff loss to Ottawa last year, but his teammates only scored twice in the entire series. This year he was second in the league in goals against average, third in save percentage. I think Philly's goaltending and team defence, with Hitchcock at the helm, is as good as anyones. And Tony Amonte, acquired at the trading deadline, has really made a difference. The Leafs made a lot of moves, but they didn't address their number problem - finding a number one, shutdown defenceman.

Pierre McGuire: It's all about team defence, and size on defence, for Philadelphia. Look at big Chris Therien and Eric Desjardins back there. And Bob Clarke made some great acquisitions. In addition to Amonte, Marcus Ragnarsson and Dmitry Yushkevich were great pick ups. They've got presence down the middle with Keith Primeau and Michal Handzus. They don't have to worry about a shutdown line because they have these two guys that can play any game you want them to play.

The MIGHTY DUCKS OF ANAHEIM, ( aka TEAM OF DESTINY FOR THE *NEW*
MILLENIUM) beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 to take a *3-0* lead in the
    best of seven series.

This was a coming out party for *FUTURE SUPERSTAR* Stanislav Chistov,
who had a goal and an assist.

    Three down!!!

    THIRTEEN TO GO!!!!!!!!!!

Now it's starting to get *really* BIG !! The mighty mighty Ducks won't lose the next four games in a row !! I'm afraid, Team Switzerland has to wait another couple of weeks for their goalkeeper to join the Worldchampionships !

The Leafs are back on track and the Dallas Stars could have early vacation this year !!!!

I thought for sure the Wings would come charging back in game 3, just like they did against my Canucks last year. Cujo's no Hasek, that's for sure.

That's only in the playoffs, though. During the regular season it's a measly five minutes (although they play four-on-four). I wish they'd expand it to ten.

Best thing they ever did was have overtime in reg.season and four - on - four is great.Teams have nothing to lose, they already have the 1 point for the tie so they go all out for the win to get the extra point. The overtime is exciting hockey and I also would like to see it go to 10 min. instead of 5.

Stars, baby! That's more like it, though Hatcher needs to chill the fuck out.

And the Bruins stay alive working the power play, not to mention a couple from defenseman Dan McGillis.

So, an OT-period is a full 20 min !!!! So, a Playoff game can last untill early morning. What was the most OT-periods ever played in a game ?

I'd love to have the same system in Switzerland. In regular season, there is a 5'min OT-period (but no points for the loser) and in the playoffs, there is a 5' OT-period followed by a penalty-shootout. Penalty-Shoutout is a gamble . They could as well throw a coin.

Ahh..the Montreal *MAROONS*. Now, there's OLD TIME HOCKEY. They didn't need no stinkin helmets or masks. Hey Don, good job by your Leafs...got by that *CLANK* by LeClair off the post Kaberle came thru. My Bolts are still alive and kicking thanks to Mr. Heart, Martin St. Louis..this guy is
amazing. 5'8" 180 lbs and he goes into the corners and always, cliche as it is, gives it his all. Vinny LeCavalier finally showed up too. Big one tonight for both of us. Good luck. Oh yea, Mone,
GO DUCKS. Beat them damn Wings!
