A browser worth checking out.

A recent issue of PCWorldhad an article by Steve bass about a new browser, MyIE2. I downloaded it at pcworld.com/40934 and have been using it for a few days.

It is very, very fast, blocks pop-ups and other net garbage and can accomodate a bunch of sites with one activation.

I have been using Netscape for years because of all the glitches in Microsoft IE.

Now, I'm a MyIE2 dude.

Gordon, I agree. Firefox is actually the first browser I'd recommend as a full-time alternative to IE. Have you checked out some of the plugins?

Glad that you like MyIE2, Clint. I haven't liked any incarnation of IE, frankly. I've also read that MyIE2 is loaded with adware and spyware, so beware.

Firefox from Mozilla is also free. It works so flawlessly and seamlessly that I'm not interested in testing another browser at this time. And it's not a clone of a Bill Gates product.

You got the big one, as far as I'm concerned, the tab browser extensions, which is essential. Firefox already comes with a Google bar. You had to download it as an extension?

Mone - If you have and use IE 6.0, for example, and proceed to download Firefox...is there any chance of the thing gunking up the registry? Or registry conflicts, etc...(I'm making this stuff up since I am clueless). I'd like to check it out but I'm paranoid about downloading anything on this new machine (other than poker sites, of course )

The IE vs. Firefox choice is an easier one than Bush vs. Kerry, IMO

Here is yet another rec for Mozilla's Firefox. After years of shuttling - unhappily - between IE and Netscape, I for the first time have a browser I am completely happy with. Stone, I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to (with the "registry" thing), but I downloaded Firefox for free - I am also finicky about what I put on my computer these days - and the transition was absolutely seamless. That's one of the great things about it, actually: no mess, no fuss... perfectly streamlined with just enough features to do what you need.

EDIT: I had never checked out the tabbrowsing before this discussion - what a flipping cool thing to have! I'm even happier with my Firefox now...

Chuckyd - I'm not sure what I mean. Thanks for sharing your experience with the browser. I suppose I'll check it out, as long as I can keep IE as my default browser while I take Firefox for a test drive.

Be sure to activate the "duplicate tabs" feature in your options within tabbrowser extensions. I use that one a lot.

Stonemonk, I won't say there's absolutely NO chance (computers are finicky things) but I have both residing on my system, and I wouldn't anticipate a problem. You can't really remove IE from Windows.

Stonemonk, I'm not nearly as computer literate as Moné (and others here), and I'm also very selective about what I download and install on our computer. I have IE, Netscape, Opera and Firefox installed, and they all act in a completely normal fashion and nothing has been compromised. The fact is that I like Firefox best, followed by Opera. I think you'll love this browser if you install it.

From what limited knowledge I have, MyIE2 is not a true browser in the sense that Firefox and Opera are, but rather operates as an adjunct to whichever version of IE you have installed on your machine. Is that correct, Moné?

Poker sites would likely be more dangerous (Adware/Spyware) to your machine than installing this browser.

Firefox for me, for the same reasons the others above state. I only use IE6 now for pages Firefox won't open, this only happens about once a month or so.

I had no problems installing and running Firefox. However their site has an extensive troubleshooting page for the few users who do.

Yes, its the 'tab browsing' that's the clincher for me though. No more multiple windows open, just different tabs within the same window. I am not sure but this would have to make Firefox less of a resource hog, no?

BugMeNot.

I hope Firefox users have added the above extension. When you go to a site that requires free registration, right click and choose bugmenot and you will usually find a user name and password that works-saving registration time.

It works great for all of those newspaper sites that require registration.

The row of selections starting with B isn't working for me in Firefox today. If I click on B or the image square or the link thing next to it, nothing happens. I had to go to IE to paste in a hyperlink. I have javascript enabled and even told Firefox not to block popup windows from www.jazzcorner.com.

Did something change here today? I didn't have the problem yesterday. I use Firefox 0.9.3.

No, I can't figure it out. font/size/color work but nothing under it nor the Smilies. I tried from a different computer and everything worked fine. I generaly post from this computer so will to either type in the script for links and images or use IE until I figure it out. Puzzling.

I see only a red X. I tried some "tips and tricks". Maybe one of them messed things up. I may reinstall 0.9.3, after cleaning out my profiles. I have a multitude of them. I'll just make sure to export my bookmarks first.

Ron, I found out where the problem was coming from-- tabbrowser extensions. I uninstalled firefox and all of my mozilla related profiles folders then reinstalled 0.9.3. I added extensions back one at a time until I replicated the problem.

Do you use adblock? This page lists some adblock filters that are worth adding under adblock/preferences. I think "annonce" is supposed to be "announce."

I've been using MyIE for a while and am very happy with it. It has tab browsing, good ad blocking and is very quick.

I'm curious about Firefox and have downloaded it but haven't done much with it.

Based on you guys' recommendations, I'll fool around in the fire.

Many of the extensions I had installed didn't work with 1.0 so I went back to 0.9.3.

A warning: One should uninstall all extensions before installing 1.0. Only extensions that are compatible with 1.0 should be reinstalled. Adblock is one of those. Tabbrowser Extensions and Googlebar are not yet compatible.This page lists all extensions and which versions are compatible
