I was wondering what the "avant-garde" were up to in Paris--is group sex really considered cutting edge? Sounds kind of retro.

That's what I was thinking too. I've always wondered what they talk about at those clubs. I suspect that the immediate conversation is of what their plans are for whatever sexual configuration they expect to be engaging in. At this point, this particular wife apparently said that she didn't think so and they left.
The people remaining in the club, like all strangers at gatherings ranging from neighbourhood barbeques, to sophistocated cocktail parties, would not talk at all, or talk about their work, their investments, their gardens, their hobbies or the same things people talk about anywhere else. Just imagining their conversations, while all around them are performing erotic, or even comical acts, when observed by non-participants, makes me smile.

I've never been to one of those supposedly avant-garde sex clubs in Paris (or any other kind, for that matter). That's because my political career could be over before it started. Can't take that risk.
Incidentally, can someone explain the thread title to me? 7 of 9 what?

Man, I thought every red-blooded hetero male knew that one. Ryan was the only reason to even watch the show.
Her and the Black Vulcan. How did that happen? Was he half human and half Vulcan?

Jack Ryan Says He's Quitting Senate Bid
7 minutes ago, 6-25-04
By DAVID ESPO and RON FOURNIER, Associated Press Writers
WASHINGTON - Illinois Republican senatorial candidate Jack Ryan, his candidacy in turmoil over sex club allegations, decided to quit his quest for Congress on Friday. "I am today withdrawing from the race," he said in a statement prepared by his campaign.
"It's clear to me that a vigorous debate on the issues most likely could not take place if I remain in the race," added the statement, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press.
"What would take place, rather, is a brutal, scorched-earth campaign — the kind of campaign that has turned off so many voters, the kind of politics I refuse to play."
Illinois GOP leaders would select another candidate in the event of a withdrawal. Ryan's replacement would become an instant underdog in a campaign against Democratic State Sen. Barack Obama.
Ryan conducted an overnight poll to gauge his support in the wake of the allegations made by his ex-wife in divorce records unsealed earlier this week. Aides said in advance his only options were to withdraw or to redouble his campaign efforts with a massive infusion of money from his personal wealth.
Illinois Republican Party leaders convened a teleconference in the hours before Ryan made his announcement, although it wasn't clear whether they had yet turned to discussion of who might replace Ryan some four months before the November election.
Several names immediately surfaced, including state Sen. Steve Rauschenberger and dairy owner Jim Oberweis, both of whom lost to Ryan in the primary, and former state Board of Education chairman Ron Gidwitz. Additionally, other GOP officials floated the name of Patrick Fitzgerald, a U.S. attorney in Illinois.

She was on Star Trek: Voyager. 7 of 9 was from the Borg, a sort of technological bee-hive with androids instead of bees. In a happy coincidence for the eyes of male viewers, she just happened to be the only borg member not horribly disfigured, pale and with lots of protruding tubes and metal.

Why wouldn't there be different shades of Vulcans?

If Ryan had stayed in the race, he would have won the "swing" vote. Now the Republicans won't even win that.

Kerry's next. How many people who enjoyed the unsealing of Jack Ryan's divorce will claim that the unsealing of Kerry's divorce is a miscarriage of justice?

Gordon, almost everybody's divorce is at worst ugly and at best unflattering. Nobody describes the spouse they are divorcing in a flattering way, even if they are going for an essentially amicable divorce.
If the opposing campaigners have to use divorce court information to present Kerry in an unattractive light, they must have run out of political ammunition. Nobody gets personal, unless that's all they have.

Patricia, whatever argument you make for Kerry also holds for Ryan, no?
As far as your last sentence goes, wouldn't that also apply to Michael Moore and Paul Krugman?

Reevaluating @ 500k
I thought "7 of 9" was some term for a kind of kinky sex, and I was too embarrassed to admit I didn't know it.

I do, however, know that 77 is better than 69 because you get 8 more.

Count me as a Democrat who wants Obama to win, and was totally nauseated by the press' behavior in this story. Count me as naive, too, that sealed divorce records can be turned over to sleazy journalists on a fishing expedition. Ryan seems like a decent guy who deserved a lot better.
but to show you how out of touch I am, I had never heard of Jeri Ryan before, never mind getting the "7 of 9" reference. Those photos of her are scary, though - she has had some very extreme and unattractive plastic surgery on her chest and lips...
