Blues Alley does charge real money. For Diane Hubka on a Thursday, my guess is a $15 cover plus the usual $9 minimum. Despite its problems, I still like Blues Alley more than most people seem to.

    Pete--

I think we're defining "concerts" differently--or maybe we're defining "early evening" differently! They tend to cut back the festival over the years, and I couldn't find the 2002 schedule, but FWIW, here's the schedule of evening events at the 2001 festival for the equivalent week (and the rest of the dates).

And a $2.25 surcharge too (a mandatory donation to the Blues Alley Music Society), as I read on Blues Alley's website? I don't remember that.

Here's an incomplete schedule of folklife festival evening performances. It looks like Ali Farka Toure & Salif Keita won't be there till the 2nd weekend.

Pete--Could be. I'll continue to hope otherwise because that schedule looks like a pretty rough draft, and it's not a Smithsonian page.

Is anyone going to the Steve Turre' Tribute to J.J. Johnson w/Robin Eubanks Thursday or Friday the Kennedy Center Jazz Cafe' -- 2 sets each night at 8 & 10. I think I will make the 10pm show on Thursday.

I don't think I can manage that in addition to the Sangha show, but at any rate, I wouldn't be going to the 10 p.m. performance, because my bus connections on the way home from there would be too iffy.

Fred, are you going to the Sangha show on Friday night?

Yes, I plan on it. I don't think I will be able to meet before for dinner, but I'll be there for the show.

Fred--Great. That makes three or four of us going to the Sangha show so far.

Yes, I'm going with my spouse to the 10pm show on Thursday. It'll be nice meeting you again, Fred.

Unfortunately, I will be on the other side of the Atlantic on June 26 (where I am currently located as well). But I hope that you have a good time in the capital of world madness, Pete.

I did see Barak and his wife at the Steve Turre' show on Thursday -- a nice set of J. J. Johnson tunes with Robin Eubanks, Stephen Scott, Peter Washington, and Victor Lewis. Friday, it was Dunmall, Rogers, and Norton and Bluenoter, Sergio, & Clay. It looks a little slow in DC for the new couple of months (Twins hasn't posted their schedule), so I included some world music as well.

    5/30-31 Tim Warfield at Twins
5/30-6/1 Rene Marie at Blues Alley
5/30 Krishna Mohan Bhatt, sitar, Anindo Chatterjee, tabla at the Freer Gallery
6/3 Garage a Trois (Mike Dillon, Charlie Hunter, Stanton Moore, Sherik) at the 9:30 Club
6/8 Medeski, Martin & Wood at Wolftrap
6/10 Dave Stryker-Steve Slagle Quartet at Blues Alley
6/19 Solomon Burke at the Birchmere
6/19 Cesaria Evora w/Lila Downs at Wolftrap
6/20-21 Sonny Fortune Group at Blues Alley
6/22 Roy Hargrove’s RH Factor, Los Van Van, Maceo Parker et al at Wolftrap
6/26 David Sanborn at the Birchmere
6/28 Bebel Gilberto at Lisner Auditorium
6/28-29 Larry Willis w/Buster Williams, Ben Riley & Slide Hampton at Blues Alley
    7/21 Mariza at the Birchmere
7/24 Subhashish Mukherjee at the Freer Gallery
8/10 Arturo Sandoval at the Birchmere
10/4 Remember Shakti at Lisner Auditorium
10/17 Ellery Eskelin Trio at Sangha Café (?)

October 4th is usually my laundry night, but I hope to make the show.

I'm looking forward to Solomon Burke on 6/19.

Burke is great, but he's too damn big to move much, so he generally sits on his throne (literally) for the whole show. He's been touring with Van Morrison recently.

Fred, It was great meeting you again.

The Turre set was very nice, but not great, IMO. I really enjoyed myself. Turre and Eubanks form a great front line and the 2 bone sound sounds so sweets to my ears.

Turre also pulled out his Shells for a 5 min. solo. It was very nice. Not overdone or showoff as one would expect.
The rhythm section was solid with some great playing from mr. Washington on Bass.

But if he decides to get up, watch out!

I'll be at the Burke show.

Tyondai Braxton & DC Improvisers Collective

    The Warehouse Theater (1021 7th St., NW) Wed June 18 8pm $12

This double-bill promises an evening of electrifying spontaneous composition. Brooklyn based Tyondai Braxton will present a solo performance using his arsenal of loops and live processing - an approach he used to refer to as "guitar techno" which has evolved over the years to a more sophisticated sonic exploration informed equally by DJ techniques, avant-garde jazz, art-rock, contemporary composition, and video game music. The DC Improvisers Collective (DCIC) will be celebrating their new CD release with a set of their own unpredictable blend of electronics, jazz, and so-called "serious" music.

John, I saw Burke recently, and it was a bit disappointing, but the conditions were bad. It was outdoors at Central Park, and he only got a short set as an opener for Lucinda Williams. The only thing he did from "Don't Give Up On Me" was the title tune. But I'm looking forward to catching him at the Bumbershoot festival, and maybe a bit at North Sea.

A show of his I caught in the late '80s at Tramps was one of the greatest concerts I've ever witnessed.

Interesting. I guess that Solomon could be slowing down after all these years. I have also been to some truly great Burke shows in the past.

By the way, I am one of the seemingly few people who love Burke and don't like Don't Give Up on Me. I consider it to be one of his weakest albums.

I read somewhere that he was in a wheelchair at a recent awards show. The Birchmere should be a perfect venue for him -- very intimate, not enough room to move on stage even if he could.

Twins has its June schedule online now. During Petefest:

Malachi Thompson, Friday, June 27 and Saturday, June 28
    9 and 11 p.m.
$14 cover (see #57 for info. on the minimum)
    -------------------------------------------
Also, Pete, did you see this three-page list of the Mali performers?

The same sketchy schedule of evening performances that you found is still up, though.

That's good news. Thanks for the update on the Mali performers too--lots of new names to me. The Appalachia list looks interesting too.

More info. on the cost: FWIW, I just talked to someone at Twins and was told, "There's a $14 cover and a $10 minimum, but they're both for the night, not per set. We don't clear the house between sets." Me: "Really? Not even on weekends?" (their website says that they sometimes do). "No, not even on weekends."

Based on that tentative Smithsonian evening schedule, it looks like Friday would be a better bet for Twins. Who's up for it?

The 27th is OK for me.

The last Malachi Thompson show I saw at Twins was very nice -- Kirk Brown (from Chicago) was on piano, and east-coast locals James King and Naser Abadey were bass and drums. I hope the lineup will be the same on the 27th.
