Ramones Guitarist Dies of Cancer in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Johnny Ramone, the lead guitarist with influential U.S. punk rock band the Ramones, died on Wednesday after a five-year battle with prostate cancer, a long-time associate told Reuters.
Ramone, 55, who was born John Cummings, died in his sleep at his Los Angeles home about 3 p.m. EDT, said Arturo Vega, the Ramones' creative director.
At his bedside were his wife, Linda, as well as rock stars such as Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder (news), Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante and hard-rocker Rob Zombie, Vega said. They had participated in a Los Angeles concert last weekend celebrating the Ramones' 30th anniversary. Ramone was too sick to attend, and instead spoke to the fans by phone.
Ramone will be cremated in a private ceremony on Thursday, and plans are being made for a public memorial, including the unveiling of a statue, at some stage, Vega said.
The Ramones, famed for playing their high-energy, unpolished songs at breakneck speed, rose to fame in New York City in the early 1970s, paving the way for such British punk rock icons the Sex Pistols and the Clash.
The band made its mark with nihilistic tunes like "Blitzkrieg Bop," "I Wanna Be Sedated" and "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue," but it never achieved the commercial success of groups that followed in its wake.
Ramones singer Joey Ramone -- born Douglas Hyman -- died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer, while bassist Dee Dee Ramone, who was born Douglas Colvin, died from a drug overdose the following year.

Damn!
I was never a Ramones fan either, but agree that far too many creatively-inspired folks are dying far too young. Some are dying for reasons largely of their own doing, while others are simply dealt a cruel hand.

Yeah, Frank Zappa died when he was, what, 52?
Cancer.
Yet again.
Far too young.

I don't know if this is accurate or not, but I seem to recall that Zappa's life could have been prolonged with preventive screening for prostate disease. By the time the cancer was discovered it was too late.
I'm 52, and I've really noticed a lot of musicians who didn't live past 52 (Zappa, George Adams, Don Pullan, and several more I can't remember), so I asked my doctor what preventative measure can be taken. His reply was that the bottom line (besides a healthy lifestyle) in early detection, which for men is chest x-ray for lung, psa marker for prostate, and screening colonoscopy. I'm getting my first colonoscopy in three weeks - not particularly looking forward to it, although friends of mine who have had it tell me that they really don't remember anything due to the cool drugs they give you.

RIP, Johnny.
"I met her at the burger king we fell in love by the soda machine
So we took the car downtown the kids were hanging out all around
Then we went down to coney island on the coaster and around again
And no one’s gonna ever tear us apart cause she’s my sweetheart
All right, oh yeah
Oh oh I love her so oh oh I love her so oh oh I love her so"

Singer Marc Almond, whose 1980s band Soft Cell scored a hit with "Tainted Love," was in critical condition yesterday after suffering head injuries in a road crash. Almond, 47, was riding on a motorcycle when it collided with a car in London Sunday.

Sad news:
Longtime Doobie Brothers drummer Keith Knudsen, 56, died of pneumonia on Feb. 7th. Knudsen had been in the hospital for more than a month. The drummer played with the band from 1974 until the band's 1982 farewell tour. Knudsen and Doobie Brother bandmate John McFee went on to form and release 5 albums as part of Southern Pacific but rejoined them in 1993.
Ray Davies of the Kinks will return to the hospital for surgery to have the titanium rod in his leg (that was inserted after he was shot during a mugging last year) removed. He is expected to need until late March to recover before heading on stage.

Don't even know why I'm posting this, other than it makes me sad. Someone just told me that Rick Danko was pushing 400 pounds when he died. I searched the net to see if I could find a corroborating photo. This is legit; it's from The Band's website, taken four months before he died. Sad.

i really don't understand what the big deal is. sad to say that all of the musicians that have passed on, had surgery or still living on until the devil releases his papers,
keith richard is not normal.
in the music world chemicals, cigarettes, heavy eating and not watching their diets will and did kill most of these dudes.
as for bobby brown, whitney houston is one step away from the insane asylum.
i am shocked about hearing of bobby hatfield. i loved his singing. i have the righteous brothers vinyls.
oh, and george clinton could be related to ex president clinton. they did say after the arsenio hall show and clinton playing the sax and from arkansas that he had black in him. george clinton is a half brother or cousin. who knows these days
for the many others, meat loaf is kind hearted. seen his wife lately. hubba hubba.
i love ossie osborn. try and figure out next what will come out of his mouth and he will have you peeing on the floor.
it was said at a detox center that when he went in the front door he asked where the hell the fucking bar was.
next he said that when he was in san francisco he had heard the song of "if your going to san francisco, be sure to wear flowers in your hair.
ossies remark was" what fucking flowers, where is san francisco and i don't want to look like a fucking girl.
then his show comes out on TV. at home with the Osborns.
i am telling you all that as God is my witness, this man is a hoot.
i watched every show till it went off the air.
watching sharon and ossie talking in the car has got to be on of the funniest things that they should have on with those shows that show how people are behind closed doors.
don't think Dick Clark would approve. the nutjob that he is.
Gentle Giant that post about ted nugent is funny.
ted nugent was on the show with the guy that did interviews right after Johnny carson years ago.
Tom something. ted and ossie were at the airport and got stopped by some hare kressnas(sp).
they asked ted to donate some money and he puked into their bibles and said "their it is". pure elk meat in that. take it home for supper.
ossie was asked about his tattoos and he told them to fuck off. he then said that if he was abnormal with his british accent and tattoos, he thought that those bible toting fools with a sprige of hair on their heads had to leave the planet.
i am dying here repeating all this stuff. next was meat loaf taking about his life with Johnny carson. this was just before carson left his show.
he had some very funny stories to tell about meeting osborn, nugent and keith richards. he can't understand why keith is still alive. pardon me, he said but the man looks like he should be in a coffin and he was a good friend of his.
he then talked about his weight and osborn again. he said that nugent was a little nutty with his obsessions with guns. then it was off with osborn.
Johnny asked if osborn would ever come on the show and meat loaf said that he doubt it. Johnny said that in the green room they have heavy booze.
meat loaf told Johnny that ossie likes his booze and would cart off or bring on a drink.
then johnny said "well alright we will invite him on." he can have a cup like its coffee.
meat then said, "johnny, ossie drinks out of the bottle.
i never really listened to ossie osborne until i got married and can't get enough of his gaiteyand sardonic humor.
the man is so human with his attitude. he pokes fun at his brain damage and how he would kill himself if his wife left him.
before his reality show, he remarked about how he can't smoke cigars in the house but his sons dogs can shit on the floor and he has to sit outside.
he said that this is his house but he has to smoke out side. then he stepped in some dog doo and yelled at his son. he looked at the camera. see what i mean" no place to go.
anyway all of these people mentioned have long known that their wild life in the early years will either put them in a grave or they are going to miss body parts.
the only person i can't stand is michael jackson and bobby brown. both sick mothers!!
well i really hope all are doing well. brian wilson is so sad the way he had to live.
l never liked the beach boys either, now i can't get enough out of their records and half the family is dead.
at least i can listen to wilson/phillips.
with wilson sisters and linda ronstadt.
she is the tops with me. that voice. your no good.
i remember my brother seeing her in a concert with long black hair, no bra, dirty feet and pants and just singing away with her boobs, hair and booty flying in the air.
he tooks pictures. she still is a cutie.

Singer Marc Cohn survives being shot in head
August 8, 2005
DENVER (Reuters) - Grammy-winning singer Marc Cohn was shot in the head during an attempted carjacking after a concert in Denver but survived with only minor injuries, police said on Monday.
Cohn had just finished a performance on Sunday night when a man fleeing on foot from police tried to commandeer the van Cohn was riding in, Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.
When the van driver refused to stop, the suspect fired into the vehicle, striking Cohn in the head, although the bullet did not penetrate his skull.
"The bullet hit Mr. Cohn flush in the temple," Jackson said. "He's very lucky it wasn't a fatal shot."
Surgeons removed the bullet protruding from Cohn's skull and released him in good condition Monday morning, Jackson said.
Cohn, winner of the 1991 Grammy for best newcomer and best known for the song "Walking in Memphis," is married to ABC News correspondent and anchor Elizabeth Vargas. They have a 2-year-old son.
Police said the suspect is accused of carjacking another vehicle and is still at large. Jackson said he was fleeing from police after using a stolen credit card and also was wanted for failing to appear in court.

I really think I could be helpful to Olivia Newton-John right about now. I just need to get alone with her.
Olivia Newton-John's boyfriend owed child support
Patrick Kim McDermott has been missing for weeks
The Associated Press
August 25 2005
LOS ANGELES -- The missing boyfriend of singer Olivia Newton-John had filed for bankruptcy in 2000 and was embroiled in a legal dispute over child support, court documents show.
Patrick Kim McDermott, 48, was taken to court this spring by his ex-wife over late child support payments for their 13-year-old son, according to the documents.
His ex-wife reported him missing in early July, about a week after he was last seen on an overnight fishing trip off the California coast. Newton-John drew attention to his disappearance earlier this week; she said she waited out of respect for his family.
According to the Coast Guard, McDermott was last seen on the fishing boat June 30, but no one saw him leave, and his wallet and other belongings were found onboard.
The Coast Guard is investigating his disappearance as a missing person case, but is also looking into all possibilities, including that McDermott might have staged his disappearance, said Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan Henise.
"That's part of their investigation. Until the investigation is concluded, we can't really say anything about his (financial) situation," Henise said.
According to a 1994 divorce filing, McDermott owed $800 a month in child support for his son, and as recently as April was ordered by a court to make all outstanding payments.
It wasn't immediately clear how far behind he was in the payments. He had filed for bankruptcy in 2000 while owing about $31,000 to creditors.
McDermott and his ex-wife, actress Yvette Nipar, had also fought over visitation rights, according to court documents. Nipar, who has had regular roles on soap operas, alleged in a 2002 petition that McDermott had a "lack of parenting skills," encouraged their son to "play hooky" and had trouble controlling his anger.
Newton-John, who starred in the 1978 movie "Grease", issuing a statement earlier this week that said: "For those of us who know and love him, it has been a truly heartbreaking experience and we have chosen to deal with it privately."

He's smiling in the picture because he's a cancer survivor. He's lucky simply to yet be among the living.
Van Halen Cancer Was Worse Than Reported
artist: van halendate: 08/11/2004category: general music news
Blabbermouth.net reports, Van Halen drummer told the Dutch newspaper Telegraaf that things were much more serious than anyone let on when Eddie Van Halen was being treated for cancer back in 2001. "We were used to planning things ahead with the band...but now, we had to live by the hour. At a certain time, things were so bad, we didn't even know if Eddie would be with us in three months." Alex also said, " Eddie always knew he would get better. I didn't. I was more pessimistic...All we had in those difficult times was our music. It was therapy. We played for months and months working on new songs. That's why it is so great to see us now, we are stronger then ever."
During a recent teleconference, Alex also said that he really appreciates the way Van Halen fans sent their thoughts and prayers to Eddie during that time: "I personally want to thank all the fans and everyone who sent the cards, and the e-mails, and all the rest, wishing him well."
Eddie beat his tongue cancer through aggressive treatment, including chemotherapy. He's also had hip replacement surgery. During the interview, Van Halen said that the band would play in Holland next summer, so a European tour appears to be in the works.

Quite true. If all the Van Halen guys had to sustain them was their mediocre music, they truly hit rock-bottom at that point. Forget the cancer, I'd kill myself if I had nothing but that music!
Actually, one VH tune I somewhat like is "Running with the Devil", but I think Eddie's done too much of that already. In fact, Eddie's spent so much time with the Devil that he's begun to quite resemble him.

Steven Tyler's Mystery Surgery
I never like these guys. Let's face it Steven Tyler and Joe Perry are a poor man's Glimmer Twins.

Aerosmith's Steven Tyler to Undergo Surgery
Wed Mar 22, 10:08 AM ET
Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler will undergo surgery this week for an undisclosed medical condition, forcing the band to cancel the remaining dates of its North American tour.
The band's publicist, Marcee Rondan, said Tuesday that Tyler was "doing fine" but declined to elaborate on his condition.
"Despite Aerosmith's desire to keep the tour going as long as possible, Tyler's doctors advised him not to continue performing to give his voice time to recover," Rondan said in a statement.
Tyler, who turns 58 on Sunday, can't perform for an extended period of time, Rondan said, adding the band was on hiatus.
Aerosmith canceled recent concerts in Manchester, N.H., Pensacola, Fla., and Lexington, Ky., because of illness, though the tour press director did not disclose who was sick or the nature of the illness.

I've never been hot for Aerosmith, except maybe for half a dozen tunes that are fun to crank out, but you have to give them their props. They've not only been doing their thing for a long time, but they've been extremely successful in every decade, continually rebuilding their fan base. And Joe Perry does have the chops.
