I really like that director, just recalling The Circle the other night watching Kiarostami's Ten.

Despite the blurb in that DVD cover, it's not "hilarious" at all--really very sad in many ways with regard to casually awful treatment of women in Iran. It is, however, a structurally unique film.

Ponyo - see it in the theater before it gets away!
It's now my second favorite Miyazaki film, and seems to have a ridiculously limited distribution, given the success of "Spirited Away" (my 1st favorite).
Engaging characters and sublime animation!

District 9--super creative, a litle cheesy here and there, too long and kind of joyless but intriguing.
Time Traveler's Wife--loved the book, smart and cynical AND romantic. The movie went for a more Hallmark romance with lots of warm string passages and verging on vasleine-smeared lenses, but I still enjoyed it. A chick flick to be sure, but at least one that poses some very cool questions about time travel.
Although I have the same problem with Eric Bana as I do with Christian Bale--I hear them trying to speak with their accents all the time, and I never truly buy their characters.

That is a pretty good one Latty! I've been watching the four Futurama straight to DVD films they made, after being cancelled after the third season, and which are now being shown on Comedy Central as the fourth season, having been subdivided into episode length, with an all new fifth season on the way. Hurrah!

Thirst (dir. by Chan-wook Park)
Ok but too long. Never quite grabbed me as much as I would have liked. I guess the biggest problem may have been that I didn't find the priest, the main character, as interesting as he was supposed to be

yes indeed, however I tend to see a lot of myself in that, hence only able to watch it in intervals similar to total eclipses of the sun
BTW perhaps you or someone else can help me out: my beloved wife had a"cleaning woman attack" and cleared the attic. Amongst other precious things there was a video tape, a movie by the name of "The decay of the american empire" (or similar or totally different ) anyway, its kinda like The Big Chill (gathering of people after quite some time aso) and I think I liked it even more. Does that ring a bell? Anyone able to verify the title, recall the movie??? I have googled 'til my fingers bled, did not find out
It must be older than the chill, end 70s early 80s

Return of the Seacaucus Seven (Sayles)? I always thought the Big Chill was basically a rip-off of that--with big name actors and a more expensive sound track.

thx so much walto, this rip-off hint brought me back on the tracks:
I was thinking about that movie exactly but confused it actually with another one that was wasted in the furious cleaning attack:
a canadian gem about couples, sex and food. Why did I think of decay instead of decline?
thx again

Fabulous opening 10 minutes! Fell off after that, and kept falling for way too long.

Although I don't think, as the cover notes say, that this is one of the most frightening movies ever made, it certainly cast Robert Mitchum in one of his creepiest roles, comparable to his Max Cady in the original "Cape Fear".
I'm a huge Mitchum admirer and this is one of his standout performances, IMO.
Recommended.

Interesting. I reviewed it on WMHYSP 11 and thought it was rather predictable, although not completely horrible.

A bit dated, not the greatest script, but fine performances by Poitier, Cassavetes, Jack Warden and Ruby Dee. Poitier did the role in an earlier television drama, but before MGM let him do the movie they wanted him to sign an agreement that he would have nothing more to do with Paul Robeson and Canada Lee. Poitier refused, MGM backed down.

Where's the picture you posted, Steve? I'm just getting that cute little square with the "X" in the middle.

Yeah, me, too, although I can see the picture if I do the "open in a new window" deal. It was visible yesterday, probably still visible on some computers. Let's see if this works better:

A superb piece of filmmaking from an old master. The poster is somewhat misleading as the film focuses more on the women at home waiting, wondering and actively trying to find out what's happened to their men. It also focuses on those who tried to expose the lie. The story of the fate of the Polish officers is also told but the focus for much of the film is clearly on those at home. Wajda seamlessly weaves both the act and the lie into the film and also shows the destruction of the Polish intelligensia by both the Nazis and Soviets. The final few minutes are as horrifying as anything I've seen on screen. The use of fragments of Penderecki's music was inspired. Wajda worked on the film for 12 or so years and he said on the DVD interview he bumped into Penderecki at some function. Penderecki knew Wajda was working on a film about Katyn and told him he was free to use any music he liked for the film. Wajda's father was murdred at katyn, and so although fictional characters have been created, you do get the sense this was a highly personal film and one Wajda was compelled to make. I've read plenty of criticism regarding some aspects of the structure and it can be a little confusing at times but this did not detract from the film overall. Highly recommended.

Thanks to Pat for bringing this slick entertainment to my attention. I found Julie Gayet to be fairly toothsome.
