Looking forward to the new season. hard to see at the moment how anybody could beat your Lakers, gonzo, They're the squad!
Other interesting teams have improved too! Boston, San Antonio and Orlando seem to be the most serious threats at this time. And I think some improvements in the lower ranks as well. of course I have high hopes for the Bulls.

Iverson to the Cavs? Wilbun had the idea on today's PTI. Love it! Brilliant.

I wish AI all the best. The way he came in to Detroit last year and did his best to fit right in and lead, awesome. He's the best

Yeah, he's the best. Memphis is pretty happy with him right now, too. What a winner.

Atlanta really impressed last night against Celts in Boston. Ditto Denver over LA-kers. Just got DVR for first time and really digging Friday night hoops on Saturday morning (into early afternoon. Time to get up and out)

They went from abominably bad for most of last year to competitive this year, largely due to very young players, led by the very young and superbly talented Kevin Durant. Their top rookie, James Harden, is also one of the youngest players in the NBA (KD still is).
ROLLIE: Do you remember their coach Scott Brooks (seen in the pic you posted) as a mainstay on one of the Albany Patroons' great title teams? I used to go to most of the home games at the Washington Ave Armory, where most of the seats were very close to the court and the house was rockin.
The guy who coached them to their first CBA championship, Phil Jackson, went on to coach elsewhere, I believe.
FROM WIKIPEDIA:
Originally entering the CBA as an expansion franchise in the 1982-83 season, the Patroons won league championships in 1984 and 1988, defeating the Wyoming Wildcatters in both instances.
NBA head coach Phil Jackson won his first championship ring when he guided the Albany Patroons to the 1984 CBA championship. Jackson would later win NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers.
In 1988, the Patroons won a second championship, this time under head coach Bill Musselman. Musselman would later coach the Minnesota Timberwolves, and several Patroons from the 1987-88 championship year - including Scott Brooks, Tod Murphy, Tony Campbell and Sidney Lowe - played on those early Timberwolves squads.
Three years later, the Patroons completed a 50-6 regular season, including winning all 28 of their home games; at that time, George Karl was the Patroons' head coach. Future NBA stars Mario Elie and Vincent Askew were part of that 50-6 squad.
During the Patroons' time in the CBA, they won two CBA championships and five Eastern Division regular season titles.

Hey, Steve:
Didn't know the connection to Albany. I just impulsively "picked" The Thunder since they are among the closest teams playing to my home state of Arkansas (other than Dallas, and I can't root for anything that is connected to Dallas), and it's the first major professional team, as far as I know, that has ever played out of Oklahoma.

Iverson to the rescue of D'Antoni & Co?
"Walsh, D’Antoni to meet with Iverson before finishing deal

Knicks president Donnie Walsh and Mike D’Antoni were planning on interviewing Iverson first as final confirmation of their desire to make this massive move that changes the entire face of this season’s club. There’s a possibility of Iverson coming to New York for a sit-down meeting — the primary reason for the delay.
Walsh and D’Antoni said an official signing may not come until after the weekend. Walsh, who met with his scouts yesterday, is expected to offer Iverson a one-year, $1.3M deal unless the interview goes awry.
.
The Post reported in yesterday’s editions that D’Antoni told Walsh he endorsed the move. Walsh was leaning against pursuing Iverson, calling it “a long shot,” until D’Antoni said he was all for it, a reversal of his position over the summer. A heavy recommendation from Iverson’s former coach Larry Brown also was a factor.
D’Antoni fears the Knicks’ roster might not be better than its horrible 2-9 start and is concerned a 20-win season would scare away LeBron James. At one point yesterday, D’Antoni referred to the Knicks as “dead in the water,” but he quickly corrected himself.
If Iverson sparkles and warrants a new contract, he could turn into a lure for James. Leon Rose is the agent for both James and Iverson, who has the Knicks on top of his list.
“We just don’t want to be rash about anything,” D’Antoni said. “We want to try to make a good decision, make sure everybody is on board, make sure this is a positive move. It takes a little bit of time. We played 11 games so we have 71 left, so be it if it’s 68 or 66.”
The Knicks face the winless Nets and Celtics over the weekend.
“We’re at a point where, ‘Do we need an influx of something else?’ “ D’Antoni said. “It’s always a fluid situation. We’re just trying to determine what is best for these players and this organization.”
Importantly, D’Antoni said he was not concerned about Iverson’s reputation — something that worried him in the summer. “I don’t think it’s going to be a problem, but that’s why conversations have to take place,” D’Antoni said.
Iverson would start ahead of struggling point guard Chris Duhon, who would become a backup. Nate Robinson, who is Iverson Lite, would also be greatly affected. D’Antoni would still keep rookie Toney Douglas in the mix.
Last night, Charles Barkley on TNT said, “It won’t work. The Knicks stink.” Barkley added the New York press, which he called pejorative, would make life miserable for A.I.
Perhaps one other reason for the delay in his signing was the revival of Eddy Curry on Wednesday night in his season debut in Indiana, when he scored 10 points in 11 minutes and looked like the low-post threat that nearly made him an All-Star three years ago.
“I think it weighs in a little bit because we looked good in spots, but we’ve looked good before,” D’Antoni said.
A 10-time All-Star, Iverson is hardly the player he once was. After Denver traded him to Detroit last season for Chauncey Billups, the Nuggets became beasts and the Pistons struggled.
Iverson averaged 17 points for the Pistons and was bothered by a bad back. Iverson’s stint in Memphis was an unmitigated disaster, ending after three games.
“I don’t think anybody’s made a decision yet,” D’Antoni said. “We’re going to keep looking at it. I don’t think we’re ready to say yeah or nay yet.”
A report Miami would pursue Iverson proved false, according to the Miami Herald.

With the Knicks' and the Answer's recent histories, it's hard to believe this wouldn't be a melodramatic disaster. Prediction: By mid January a popular Garden chant will be "We Want Ste-phon"
(No, I don't really believe the chant part)

Apparently not
Knicks change mind, decide not to sign Allen Iverson

The Knicks are no longer pursuing Allen Iverson, with team president Donnie Walsh saying the club has "rethought" its position on signing him, ending a week full of flip-flops.
Coach Mike D'Antoni and Walsh reached the decision Thursday night without ever speaking to Iverson in person. The major concern was whether Iverson, a free agent after clearing waivers, fit into a rebuilding 2-9 club and that the controversial 33-year-old guard would take playing time from younger players they are trying to develop.
Walsh also said the Knicks' victory Wednesday in Indiana, during which the slimmed-down version of Eddy Curry made a successful debut, was a factor.
"It has nothing to do with Allen Iverson," Walsh said. "It's a stage our team is in right now, building a team for the future. It got interesting for a while because Allen's a great player. You're 1-9, you've got to start thinking, 'We've got to get help in here.'
"When we rethought it, it could hurt our development in the future. We want to go the way we're going. There's other things we could do during the year that will be more in line with what our philosophy is.
"I didn't think it fit in the beginning," Walsh added. "When we started thinking about it, it's enticing to think you can get a guy who can score the ball that way. As it went on, I started to think with Mike that he's going to take time from some of the players we want to develop."
Walsh said he could revisit the Iverson situation, but made that seem unlikely.
"I happen to think it's not the right place for Allen, either," Walsh said. "I think Allen should go to a team in a contending situation or playoffs situation, and I think he will."
Walsh credited Curry's big season debut as making the Knicks pause.
"That's part of it," Walsh said. "Eddy's now on the team and we have to devote a lot of attention to Eddy from a franchise standpoint. We went out there in 11 minutes and actually changed the game.
"When Eddy went in, just the fact he can take the ball at them, I can see they went back on their heels," Walsh added. "And they weren't the same the rest of the game. I thought he helped win the game right there."
The Knicks went back and forth on Iverson, who cleared waivers yesterday after he was released by the Grizzlies. Walsh initially called an arrival in New York a long shot before getting the OK from D'Antoni and agreeing to try to add him to the team. Walsh said owner James Dolan did not stand in his way on the decision.
