Hey, I used to play 3rd (base), so I'm not bummed or anything. :-)
I'm just trying to get accustomed to this new look, the software's features, etc. Someday, perhaps, I'll actually have my posts recorded by this new software, along with others, including Lois. Moné seems to be locked in as #7. :-)
It could be much worse. I'm delighted with the positive changes thus far, and will be very surprised if most JC posters don't feel the same.

At home this morning on my standad connection it was WAY faster than before. Is this a function of the low number of threads archived? Hope not. Here at work, where there's a serious connection, it seems to be a tad faster also.

Ron: I've got 10 now! I think it's only counting posts in certain forums. Freaky!
Brian: It has very little to do with the number of threads. We are now bereft of the 500k headers and footers. If those were taken out, the old JC would have loaded just as fast.

Wow. Lots of fancy bells 'n' whistle! Don't have much to say right now. Just wanted to see what would happen if I try to post.

This is like special! We should encase it in lucite and hang it in the men's room, or something.

As long as it's an a height where we can pee on it in celebration.

I'd gladly piss on anything associated with Mone.
But celebration would definitely NOT be a motivating factor.

I take it the site has had a tune-up. I got that dang cable service, so it's always been pretty quick.
Meanwhile: Hi, Lois! What's new in snakes? Somebody told me to get a coachwhip to take care of the squirrels in my yard. I have to confess I'm somewhat freaked by the idea of a six-foot-long snake that lives in trees and eats squirrels. I understand they're really, really fast, too. On the other hand...I really do have a Squirrel Problem.

Dave--
Note the dates of #9 and #10. Hard to say why Deke raised the thread.
Why don't you describe your squirrel problem to our resident experts on the Gardening Thread?

My old neighbor, Pauline, who I documented in my post hurricane Florida visit used to lurk at her porch door and throw either a rake or a broom at the unsuspecting fuckerz.
It wasn't very effective in the long run, but provided hours of entertainment!!!

Shoot the fuckers and have squirrel stew. Gary could give you advice on the gun part.
(Incidentally, I PM'd you recently.)

I'd not shoot a squirrel. Or any furry creature not threatening my own furry creature.
If you want a varmint and vermin killing machine, get yourself a Jack Russell Terrorist. My pal Trooper committed genocide on the mice that normally move into the barn for warmth in winter -- so much so and so quickly that he gets (momentarily) depressed when he can't find one these days. I just tell him not to worry, little bud, we'll have lots of mice killin' time to come. Also moles, voles, woodchucks, squirrels, chipmonks, anything like dat dere.
Cats, schmats. You want some varmint killin' done, get a Jack.
PS -- Don't eat the squirrels. Mad Squirrel Disease. I shit you not. I am not making that up.

If there's a magic bullet for squirrels, I damned sure don't know of it. A coachwhip seems like about as good a solution as any, although you'll probably end up with one arriving on its own if the eating's any good. Owls will eat some of your squirrels, etc. If you're really so annoyed by them that you feel the pressure to take active measures, then I'd say Gary has the best suggestion: get a dog (I don't know anything about breeds, personally, so go with Gary's wisdom there as well). I occasionally chase them off my feeders, but I figure that, if I'm putting grub out, I don't have much business complaining about what I'm attracting. Same goes for the mice who burrow at the back edge of my yard.

We get 'em down our chimney fairly regularly (see '04's Thanksgiving thread). Between our two dogs and our insane demon cat, there's little chance of any squirrels survival once we open the fireplace. Nina and I exercise compassion, however, and either grab them with heavy gloves or herd them out the door.

What I can't figure out is how the squirrels have managed to lasso my dog with an invisible rope. I know they've done this by watching the way my dog is forced to chase them everywhere they go.

OK.
Um.
Call me slow...but what is faster/better/rounder/whatever and why is it related to squirrels?
[heaviest of sighs]
I gotta get out more.
