I love Bobby Hutcherson. He is absolutely amazing. Components is an incredible album. So is Dialogue. Those two are my favorite. His presense on other leaders' albums is always loved too. Specifically at the moment I can think of him on Tony William 's Life Time, a great album which I am going to toss on the record player right now.

I had the great fortune to hear Bobby Hutcherson live one night at Iridium. It was one of the greatest jazz shows I've ever heard (and Mulgrew Miller, who may well be my favorite pianist was also in the band).
After the show, I couldn't get the music out of my head. I kept hearing it until I went to sleep. It was good enough to stick with ya.
One thing I love about Bobby Hutcherson is that he uses both vibes and marimba. I love the sound of marimba in jazz and wish more people used it. Bobby surely makes it sound primo.

Dialogue on Blue Note is outstanding as has already been mentioned. An obvious one as a sideman Out to Lunch - Eric Dolphy, and a record I used to have One Step Beyond - Jackie McClean (this may be deleted).

Hey Robin, you already know that I adore Bobby!! I won't be able to see him at J@LC for two reasons: I don't like hearing jazz in a big hall, I like an intimate space aand 2) J@LC is expensive! I will be hearing him later though when he's at the VV. Can't wait! You also know that I love "Stick-Up", "Color Schemes" and "The Kicker"!
Cookie, I love it when he plays Marimba too!

One Step Beyond is included in the Grachan Moncur boxed set from Mosaic.
I think Dialogue and Out to Lunch are the obvious standouts, but I also like Stick-up! a lot. Perfect title for a vibes album, for one thing, and then you've got McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson, Herbie Lewis and Billy Higgins. Joe Henderson's playing really stands out for me on that one.

Ok, I asked a real Bobby Hutcherson conniseur (Jeez, Jazzzoline--help me with that spelling!), Dwayne Burno, what his favorites were. Not surprisingly, his first response was "All!!"--"hell, everything". But then he came up specifically with this list "Components", "Montara", "Now", "San Francisco" ( I have a soft spot for that album too---love Harold Land w/ Bobby), "Medina/Spiral", "Ambos Mundos" and Patterns".

It's telling how often you hear "Joe Henderson stands out as a sideman on that one". Basra, The Real McCoy, loads of others I can't think of at the moment.

Thanks for the tip. I'm a big Henderson fan.
Perfect title for a vibes album, for one thing...
As is Victor Feldman's "Malletts a forethought"
