six month void

Howdy all. Not much to say really, other than I'm glad to be back with my family and that the last six months have handed me a fresh look at life. On the rare occasion that I visited a port in East Asia, time was spent on the phone with family and raging with buddies at random bars and restaurants. Oh, the things we take for granted.

Rather than sifting through months of text and who knows how many reviews/discussions/etc, I'd like to kindly ask if anyone would care to post a list of discs that I should investigate. I've had little-to-no exposure to anything that's come out since October (shit, I haven't even seen any pictures of the Tsunami aftermath yet), so a few fingers in whichever direction would be greatly appreciated. Did a hockey season ever sprout?

While underway, I had some time to think about the portable/digital music revolution, and being trapped aboard a ship with 150 other guys, all of us with music to share, left some room for experimentation. Once I gather my thoughts (and general senses) I might post a little something on it here or at Bagatellen.

But hey, it's good to be back, and I hope life has proceeded along smashingly for everybody.

It's Christmas in March! Glad you're back, man.

I'll let others chime in with discs, as I've sorta not been buying very much for the last three months. Definitely the four ErstLive releases though.

He's in the service. He's used to taking orders from his superiors. And ignoring them.

When I saw the title I thought it was one of Scott's bathroom threads.

Anyway, welcome back Joe.

Al--good to see you. As for CDs, I imagine that you'll probably be excommunicated from the critical fraternity if by the end of the year you haven't heard the new ErstLive series & David S Ware's 3CD set from Thirsty Ear.

Nate,

Not to divert the thread, but is the Dave Ware set that good, or are you just being facetious?

I like Ware, it's just that so much of his material seems to be a rehash of what came before.

Pm if necessary.

Scott--I haven't heard it & don't intend to. But my impression is Joe was mostly looking for "news" rather than personal opinions.

Christmas! Good you're back, man. Hope you had a good cruise. Sorry to have missed your call, also. I'd have returned it but you didn't leave your number, man! Try again (and if you get the v-mail, please leave a number).

I hope I never take for granted hitting random bars in East Asia... :-)

Nate, news and personal opinions are equally sought. Right off, three discs of live Ware seems three discs too many. Who's the drummer?

I tried emailing shrugs a few times in the last few months, but no reply. Phone number's bunk too, so I'm as puzzled as the rest.

Blivinst, a couple of buddies joined me at the Shinjuku Loft in Tokyo to catch Phew's new band, Most. Imagine my surprise when the openers stepped onstage... Haino's noise trio, Head Rush. A fine evening.

I'm in Dallas for the next four weeks or so. Then back to Washington for a couple of months before moving to Oahu for three years. Cem, I hear you're back in Vancouver? If so, it's on.

I should add that I have heard the first two ErstLives & that they are indeed excellent discs.

The recent disc I've been listening most to is Sal Mosca's Thing-Ah-Majig on Zinnia.

hi, Al! you also might be interested in the triple CD on Intakt, Monk's Casino, featuring the complete recordings of Monk as interpreted by a small group including Schlippenbach and Axel Dorner. I haven't heard this either, and have heard mixed things about its success, but it's definitely high-profile...

hope you pick up the reins again at Bags, we miss you over there...
