Though never a huge fan of Herb Alpert, the musician, he did make some substantial and distinctive contributions to the American music scene.
For future reference, dow30, AllenH does a really nice job of providing
monthly listings of jazz artist's birthdays, though by his own admission, it's not perfect. March 31st was not included in this month's calendar, for reasons unknown to me.
