Harald Juhnke, German Sinatra, Dies of Alcohol Abuse Aged 75
April 1 (Bloomberg) -- Actor, comedian and singer Harald Juhnke, Germany's answer to Frank Sinatra, died today at the age of 75, a statement on his Web site said.
Juhnke had spent the past three years in a nursing home near Berlin as he suffered from dementia. His death was the result of prolonged alcohol abuse and his health had deteriorated lately, the statement said, citing his wife Susanne Juhnke.
The entertainer was one of Germany's most popular actors and was famed for covering Sinatra songs in German, calling an album ``His Way.'' The tracks included ``Berlin, Berlin,'' his version of ``New York, New York.''
Born June 10, 1929, as the son of a policeman, Juhnke had his own television shows including ``Musik ist Trumpf'' and ``Wie waer's heut mit Revue'' in the late 1970s and 1980s. He won several entertainment prizes including the Golden Camera in 1981.
Juhnke's other successes included his leading role in ``The Captain of Koepenick'' by Carl Zuckmayer at Berlin's Maxim Gorki Theater in 1996 and his role in Schtonk, a 1992 film on the forgery of Adolf Hitler's diaries.
Claus Peymann, Director of the Berliner Ensemble theater, said Juhnke was a ``great Berlin clown and comedian, a grandiose entertainer and anarchist,'' German news wire DPA reported.
``Fittingly, he died on April 1, and this time it's not one of his jokes,'' DPA cited Peymann as saying.
