A Farewell to the Joe Maneri Quartet at Barbes

BARBES PRESENTS A FAREWELL TO THE JOE MANERI QUARTET.
A three day mini-festival featuring legendary reeds player Joe Maneri. April 20, 21 and 22.

Joe Maneri started out his career in the 50's as a microtonal composer who studied under Joseph Schmid, a student of Alban Berg - while at the same time, performing Greek, Syrian, Jewish and Turkish music on clarinet. Both sides of his musical personality ended up in his early compositions, along with a strong interest in what would eventually been known as free jazz. The results can be heard on Paniot's Nine, the influential album he recorded in 1965 and was released by John Zorn only 30 years later - leading to a regain of interest in his music.

In 1995, the celebrated reed player and microtonal theorist formed the Joe Maneri quartet with his son, violinist Mat Maneri, who had already made a name for himself in the creative music scene, both as a sideman and with his band Persona. The quartet quickly became a jazz institution which released over 10 influential and critically albums

After an exciting 10 years, the quartet has decided to call it quits and will play its final concerts at Barbes. They will be joined by trumpeter Herb Robertson on Wednesday, pianist Dave Burrell on Thursday and vibraphonist Matt Moran on Friday. The concerts will be filmed for an upcoming DVD.

I'm dreaming a dream

now I can actually live a dream that was gone - a dream turned inside out - one might say a living nightmare - and now we live again

dreaming of the master

it will be the 21st of this month - god willing the great man, the Round One - will make his way to a stage with those three wands that sometimes produce magic that transcends any words of musical description or analysis - last time, I was only partially there - I think it was late 2002 - with Craig Taborn and Roy Campbell added to the quartet - do not recall who the bassist was that night - I was on my out.....

still heard some magic once the old man got his footing - and the drums punded, the band roared - the band cried, Joe cried through his horns - I didn't

joy was lost - now real joy is back

and what a night this will be - I am crying with joy this morning as the rain falls on the roof of my new life's quarters - maybe a friend will join me - but I know that Joe Maneri certainly isn't for everyone - don't want to scare away potential future minions from enjoying the 16th of June

but I can't wait to say hi to my hero of heroes - the one the first time we met exclaimed to his son that "this guy buys our records"

and I hope he is smiling for what he has given to a few that have heard the majesty - a majesty uniquely his own, his own magic, a magic that comes from something a just a little bit greater than he

"Duke Ellington called and asked me to play Sophisticated Lady"

indeed - not like any lady that Duke might have known - but a fine lady nonetheless - maybe the finest I have known

can you imagine

that I have a nice dream - and you have a sick one - that you lay off here as some kind of demented, depraved joke?

I am so blessed to be able to hear the beauty - that some are not able to hear it - that's ok - many of my best friends here do not hear what I hear when I hear Joe Maneri play his horn

but some do

only one person here lowers himself to such a crass level - to insult someone and his being in such a way that nothing is more despicable to me this morning than what was written above about a musician who has affected some lives so deeply - how many is not important - and if I was in position to get my friend from the north to New York City on the 21st of April, I would do it

god willing, one day I will have the freedom I've never had to do those sort of things for my friends - some friends of mine are doing that for me today - things that are unspeakable and indescribable to those who don't know

and there is no way one could know

with Joe Maneri's music - why do you assume that because you can't hear *it*, that *it* isn't there?

and look who he thinks plays the blues - majesty of the blues, my ass

He probably doesn't even think Joe Maneri plays the blues - ho0w would he know - he is empty - nothing to give - nothing to share - no blues, baby

blues as deep as his soul from somewhere else

blues and feeling ain't in scales and schools, baby

You know, Rob, I have to admit that although I didn't agree with a lot of what you've had to say in the past, I thought you knew a lot about music in general and you were a pretty intelligent fellow. I still think you know a lot about music and I still think you're a very intelligent guy. But, for the life of me, I can't figure out why you would go out of your way to post such inflammatory remarks. I don't know, maybe you're having a bad day. Maybe you're bored and you feel like jacking somebody up. I just know that you're better than that. Whether you care or not you're credibility has taken a direct hit, my friend. Here's hoping you reach a place where you feel more comfortable.

Peace.........................

To Steve Reynolds

I'm sorry your expression of your dream got derailed, but just remember it's the expression, the dream can't be squashed...

Steve, so glad to hear that joy has returned to your life.

What brought it back to you, and where are all these new friends coming from? Whatever your secret is, you appear to be on the RIGHT track.

Missed the Damen dustup. Would have been curious to hear what the Wyntonian flak-meister had to say.

Steve is right....There really is nobody like Mr. Joe Maneri. But he's not for everyone.

Sisco: make the trip, man. I know you usually crash chez Josh, but I could put you up as well.

Swing High, baby!

Paul -- I wish I could, man, but I can't. Too much work around the place, not enough bread to pay others to do it, and no one reliable to trust Bronwyn's care to 24/7. And then there's the dogs. I don't get around much, anymore.

Otherwise, I surely would.

I'm just glad and honored to have had the chance to hear the Quartet at its best one night in Burlington a couple years back (with Formaneck on bass rather than Peterson but he was very good with them) -- and to have the chance to talk and hang a bit with The Round Man. It was an excellent show, with two great sets.
