Voices of Posters

Do any of you ever read posts by individuals here that you've never met and imagine it being said by somebody whose voice you're familiar with?

When I read Dolan's posts, invariably he will refer to somebody as "brother", so I give a Hulk Hogan voice to him. That he posted pictures of himself after hoisting major iron prolly was an influence.

Uli is Tommy Chong and Frankiepop is Emo Phillips.

None of those is meant as an insult or anything; it says more about associations I make than it does about the posters.

Cap'n, I compare the impression I get from poster's comments with only hearing a prospective blind date on the phone, or knowing a new friend only from their letters.
I have met people, over the years, with whom I was pen-pals and I have always amazed at how much like their letters and how little like their voices they were.
I still remember agreeing to meet a guy I knew only from phone calls, [his friend had suggested he call me]. He had a very deep voice and a great sense of humour. The voice enchanted me and the sense of humour intrigued me.
I walked into the restaurant and saw this very attractive man sitting at a table, smiling at me, obviously my date for dinner and a movie. Imagine my surprise, which I hope he didn't notice, when he stood up and didn't reach my shoulder!!! I'm 5'4" tall, so figure it out. The man was a "little person", which I still think he should have mentioned. It never occurred to me to ask. I made it through the evening, but what a surprise!! We didn't really click, personally, but I continued to talk to him for quite some time, until we lost touch. Nice guy, but I guess I'm not as open-minded as I thought I was.
It's always interesting though to actually meet people whose minds are stimulating and whose views are different than the accepted ones are. That's why "hangs" are such a good idea for those who can go to them.

what a trip, Hate! Everyone here has their own particular voice just exactly like someone was talking to me, that is, as an aural experience. That freaks me out. I couldn't really describe your voices (haven't matched them to celebrities) unless maybe I were to scale them according to pitch. Ron's voice is a baritone, creamy and kindly authoritative. Cookie's a soprano, speaks in her middle range with a more vibrant timbre (as opposed to perfectly creamy--like a neutral atom or smooth-edged v. isotypes with something to grab onto, what's the word, excited atoms). Scott's voice is that of a mature male (that is past 20s), say a tenor, with a little rasp, that is, vibrant quality. Monte's pitched similarly but his voice is smoother timbre but with an oh-so-slight exciteability. Patricia, even though I have spoken with her once, I still hear as mid-soprano, light and agile yet calm, slightly lower volume and uses a narrower range than others (lack of self-importance), somewhat smooth and rich timbre for it's light quality. Dr. Dave is lower than Scott and Monte, a throaty quality and his sentences decrease in volume at the end in addition to regular melodic drop-off which I think is his tendency to apologize. (Hey, I relate, bro.) Sonic is a younger, energetic but light not heavy voice. Mostly your voices are a combination of what I know about your ages and then are fitted according to your style of communication. Pitch has got to be the age base. Consistency of content = smoothness. Lack of ego reduces volume. Excitability = excitable timbre.

I'm often mistaken over the phone for Paul Robeson. Partially that is because I answer calls with The Song of the Volga Boatman.

Let's see, Jazzooo has a voice younger than his age that reflects for me his optimistic attitude toward (embracing of) life. Larry's voice is energetic, somewhat percussive, just underneath a barking (of orders probably that is), but not loud. Actually, Jimmy and Larry's voices have matching rhythmic qualities but Jimmy's (whom I've spoken with on number of occasions) is pitched more highly, and Larry's tones are more cool. Let's see this will take me forever...

Because I have spoken to both Ron and Tippy, as well as Mone' on the phone, I tend to agree with her that hearing their voices is very interesting. Tippy, to me, sounds very thoughtful, someone I would like as a friend. She is exactly as she appears here. Funny, incisive, understanding, all the qualities that I value. I am so pleased that I don't, in conversation, sound like daughters say my answering machine announcement does. Erin made me re-record one which she opined was "too much like a "900 number".

Ron sounds handsome as all getout, but not at all like his pictures which make him seem to be almost beatific. He's very human and every bit as wise as he seems, but in a good way.

Mone' sounds like a regular guy, but is much more handsome that he appears in print. He's the only poster I have met. I was pleasantly surprised when I met him and discovered that he is just like he is here and funny too.

Hate is sargeantesque, actually I could find a representation of his voice from 1950s television/movies probably. Cool tones, slightly throaty, assertive and authoritative but not loud.

Mone's is the deliberate soft-voicedness of a faux-poet trying to get you into bed.

That sounds about right.

This is 100% correct. Finch does have a lower note than I. But we do both share a common vocal trait. Our voices carry. Mine tends to be a bit boomy, and he has quite a bellow. And both reverberate quite nicely.
People always tell me I talk too loud. I wouldn't doubt if Finch has heard the same thing.

oh yeah, Scott has the propensity to spit (a lot) when he talks too. I think that's what I was trying to explain as my visceral response on another thread. (Hey, bro, you said I could tell you anything, remember?)

frankiepop, I assume because of his handle, I hear like a dj. So I'm definitely influenced by what people call themselves too whether or not it matches necessarily posting style.

Yes, I did.

But I didn't say that I wouldn't be mad!

Although I usually "hear" a voice when I deal with someone online, I have to admit it doesn't happen much here.

Only two posters have been given a voice in my head.

Particia. I always hear Rita Rudners voice when I read her posts. It is very similar to a brilliant lady that used to live behind us when I was in Florida. Very flower childish(and she used to get us all our weed). Used to end all of her statements with "you know?" She was a blues singer, and had a singing voice that most people would kill for. But she was flighty. And an absolute sweetie! Just like I imagine Particia to be.

And though she was twenty years my senior, she was incredibly sexy! Just like Particia!

The other voice I hear is Tippz. Her voice in my head is an angry 9 year old! Small, but always looking to do battle with those twice her size and age. And the angry turtle avatar has a lot to do with that.

You see, I never told this online before (or have I?), but when I was 3 or 4, I'd been happily riding my tricycle around the neighborhood when it became necessary that I make a pit stop. I left the tricycle in the next-door neighbor's driveway behind their frosty brown chevy impala and made a run for it. The thing is I *remember* making the decision to leave it there, "Nah, it'll be okay, you'll be right back!" Alas, I must have been waylaid, our neighbor Marlys looked none too happy when she stormed up our walkway with my demolished tricycle in hand. I never got a new one either.

How about Yosemite Sam for Scott?

What an interesting thread concept. Tippy came very close to describing how I hear my own voice in my head. I'm definitely a baritone, and sang in a church choir (with Patti) and chorale in college. Thanks for the complmentary adjectives, Tippy. You too, Patricia. Patricia's voice is somewhat lower in pitch than I had imagined, but has very nice qualities, including a reassuring, gentle feel.

Yes, I definitely make certain associations with posting style and voices. Sometimes I'm pretty accurate and other times I'm way off base. Dobie's voice was almost exactaly as I expected -- somewhere between upper baritone and lower tenor, with a philly/ny accent, a minor raspiness, and sometimes very clipped pace. His laugh was huge, genuine and infectious.

This is a similar phenomenon to trying to figure out what a radio announcer looks like, based solely upon their voice and speaking style. That can be a real trick bag, believe me. When I worked in radio at KJZZ, most of us had frequent callers who were enamored with our voice and/or style. Sometimes it was a little unnerving. In the later days, when we moved our studios from the 15th floor to the 1st floor of a 15-story building with a studio window at streetside, they'd actually drive by or walk up and look right into the studio.

I've actually heard the voices of many more JC members than I've met. I hope to change that over the next few years.

Scott is correct. My wife is always shushing me. I don't know why I'm so loud; I don't mean to be. (If I ever start to lose my hearing I'll be a terror, I'm sure.) On the other hand, it's probably my best asset as a singer. You may not think I'm any good, but by god you're going to hear me.

Also, (like Lois, as I once discovered) I have this extra-low range that I call my "FM voice" which I used when I was a radio DJ.

Tip's probably on the money about my voice, though the way she describes it sounds nicer than how I hear it.

If you're interested in hearing my singing and speaking voice, try these MP3s if you haven't already. http://www.cookiecoogan.com/cookieweb-mp3links.html
Nothin' fancy or great, but it's me voice ye'd be hearin' (I'm practicing up for the next Talk Like a Pirate Day).

(btw: the recordings are quite rough and the files are pretty big and annoying if you don't have a fast connection. Sorry!)

If I hadn't met Monte I'd imagine his voice as Curly Howard's.

If I didn't know Sisco I'd probably read his posts in Jack Nicholson's voice.

I always hear someone else's posts in the Emily Litella voice.

I always read Uli's posts in a Peter Lorre voice, even after meeting him.

Alastair Campbell is famous if you follow British politics, but that's about it.
