jazz and romance
okay... you are about to make a compilation for someone. This is for someone you barely know but you might have the beginnings of a crush on... and you have no idea if they are into jazz or not. The only thing you know is that a) it will be a 2 or 3 CD set, b) you are going to pull from your CD collection and c) the message you want to send is, romance, romance and more romance.
What are the 10-20 selections from your own collection would you include? (Please don't give me complete CDs just specific tracks).... I'm taking all suggestions...
(smarta** comments excluded)...
thanks!!!!!!!

Several years ago, I made up three 90-minutes tapes of Jazz Romance stuff--mostly great ballads by jazz's greatest instrumentalists. I actually used it in romantic situations a few times. In the CD burning days, I then went with 3 CD's of ballads.
Here's what I have:
JAZZ BALLADS-1
1. It Never Entered My Mind--Miles
2. Goodbye Pork Pie--Mingus
3. So Little Time--Kenny Burrell
4. God Bless the child--Sonny Rollins
5. Everytime we Say Goodbye--Trane
6. My Thief--Frisell
7. Pannonica--Monk
8. These Foolish Things—Young
9. The Man I Love--Miles
10. Westbury--Andrew Hill
11. Moon is a Harsh Mistress--Haden/Metheny
12. The Beauty of it All--Weston
13. Strawberry, Fisherman, and Crab--Miles
14. Dear Lord--Ray Anderson
15. Django--MJQ
16. Body and Soul—Lovano
JAZZ BALLADS--2
1. Good Morning Heartache--Tyner
2. Little Booker-J. Abercrombie
3. Turn out the Stars--Evans/Hall
4. Lost in the Stars--Bloom
5. Kind of Gentle--Konitz
6. Flamingo--Mingus
7. Stolen Moments--Hoggard
8. Body and Soul--Hawkins
9. When I Fall in Love--Miles
10. Ghost Town--Johnson, Frisell, Metheny
11. La Rosita--Hawkins and Webster
12. In a Sentimental Mood—MJQ and Sonny Rollins
13. Mood Indigo--Kenny
14. Isfahan—Duke
15. African Flower--Newton
16. Duke’s Sound of Love—Mingus
JAZZ BALLADS-3
1. She’s Funny that Way—Lester Young
2. Solitude—Duke
3. I Loves you Porgy—Henderson
4. I Waited for You--Dizzy
5. First Song--Haden/Metheny
6. Naima--Tyner
7. My One and Only Love--Trane
10. Windows--Chick Corea
11. Man I Love--Herbie and Joni M.
12. Lonely Woman—Silver
13. Lester—Murray
14. I Hear a Rhapsody—Konitz
15. Mirrors--Hubbard
16. Transparence--C. Haden w. Joe Lovano
17. Jump for Joy--Kenny B.
18. After the Rain--Coltrane

great list
You've got some of my favs down there... IMHO it's impossible to leave Charlie Haden off the list... I know you've got several cuts from his Pat Metheny CD (which is great).... And my new fave of his... is the American Dreams CD....
I might have to check out some of the Lester Young cuts you suggest...
And WHERE Are my fellow Petrucciani buddies??? Gotta have some Michel on this compilation...!!!!!

I agree about Beyond The Missouri Sky.
Great album all the way around. My wife and I like to listen to it when we're sitting out on our deck watching a beautiful sunset over the Missouri farmland behind us.

This is perhaps a bad idea to meantion the following, but oh well:
Peter Brotzmann- NR.14 Tenor Sax from 14 Love Poems or if that fails, try NR.7 Baritone Sax from the same disc.
Eddie Prevost Quartet-I'm In The Mood For A Semantic Theory from Continuum
Anthony Braxton has also composed a few ballads of his own, though I do not remember the titles (or lack of) at this time.

True, considering that the above Brotzmann pieces mentioned are more considerably mournful and sobering as opposed to romantic or sexy.

How can you talk about jazz and romance and not mention Chet Baker? Man, he ALWAYS worked for me! (I'm going to laugh all day today, just remembering...there are one or two things about being older that aren't so bad...)
PS: Suibne made a really excellent pick. Louis and Ella singing "Dancing Cheek To Cheek" and "Stars Fell On Alabama" are performances that definitely set the mood for love!

I'd go heavy with Miles, Bill Evans, and Duke. Vocally, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, and Joe Williams. For a smoothie choice, I've always found John Klemmer's "Touch" kinda sexy.

I think Fred Hersch's and Norma Winstone's "Song and Lullabies" is pretty romantic......

Some artists are just geared toward romance.
I think that no one played ballads better than Miles.
With saxophonists, the first name would name would probably be Ben Webster. Then you gotta have Johnny Hodges in there. Among active players, Joe Lovano often does some achingly beautiful playing on ballads.
I really have not heard a lot of Chet Baker, but he seems a good choice.
I think Bill Evans would work well too.
I always thought Haden's Quartet West was a fine romantic group, especially when he was adding in original performances from the 1940's and 50's.

I wish I knew a bit more about you and her, your ages and your own musical tastes. Personally, if someone gave me a three-CD compilation of artists mostly from the 40s, 50s and 60s, I'd immediately assume that their tastes were a tad old-fashioned. Adding in some Haden/Metheny is a great move, as would some Brad Mehldau Ballads like Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered. John SCofield has some beautiful romantic ballads with a hint or two of quirk on almost every album--there's a beauty on Grace Under Pressure but I can't remember the name.
And I've got to mention that a new album by bassist Darek Oles, featuring several duets with Mehldau, definitely did the trick last night.

If you're not sure, then you probably shouldn't go so straight-ahead....
I'd put some Lonnie Liston Smith/Pharoah Sanders (Astral Travelling & others), Stanley Turrentine (Sugar, Salt Song, Don't Mess w/Mr. T), Gotta have Gato Barbieri (Europa), Stan Getz doing Jobim, something from Kind of Blue, Trane (Naima), Dexter (a cool ballad), Donald Byrd (Cristo Redentor), maybe Herbie Mann (Never Can Say Goodbye), etc....
Keep it in the ballpark (bedroom...), and you shouldn't go very wrong...
I've heard a thousand people comment to me, "Gee, I don't really like jazz, but I like what you guys play"...., and it's all about keeping it free & improvisational, but with enough handles for anyone to grab onto....

Ben Webster - Ballads
Billie Holiday - Lady in Satin
Jon Lucien - just about anything (the Luther of Jazz)
Miles - Ballads
I used to have my "mac" CDs, but it's been 7 years since I've pulled them out.
Yes even ladies have those certain CDs they put on a 5 CD player...with random shuffle.
Last Tango is a nice choice

Yeah, man. If you do that, neither of you will care what music is playing.
