Would you consider going after a couple of box sets, Scott? There's a little bit of duplication between Genius and Soul and The Complete Country & Western Recordings 1959-1986 but if a thousand dollars fell from the sky tomorrow these would be ordered and I'd probably call it a day (as far as accumlating more Ray).
If you're not going to spring for all that, I'd grab Modern Sounds In Country and Western Music and wait for everyone else here to chime in regarding the rest.

"The Best of Ray Charles" on Atlantic probaby gives you the most for your money on a single disc. It has "I Got A Woman" and a couple of totally rockin' obscurities like "I Don't Need No Doctor." A good alternate choice is "The Very Best of Ray Charles" on Rhino, which has all the cool hits, including "Let's Go Get Stoned" which is in the present era X-rated.
Also: You absolutely, positively, need "Ray Charles and Betty Carter." Their version of "Two To Tango" totally rocks.

So, now I am kicking my own buttocks for not hanging on to my vinyl Ray from the early sixties. I had them all!!! but,as I've mentioned in my oft-repeated lament, I shed all my vinyl and my turntable with one of my moves and continue to re-construct it.
Although I may have to resort to re-releases on CD, I would rather have the LPs, so, to that end I'm scouring the vintage vinyl outlets here.
Love the man and his music and have since I started to listen to music seriously when I was in my early teens.

It's hard to go wrong with "The Birth of Soul", a 3CD box set spanning the Atlantic years.

LISTEN TO PETE....AMAZING! These tapes were held back by Ray....Tina Brooks (Yep!) playing fours with Dave Newman?...Ray playing alto...?
I have the tapes of the Antibes 1961 concert and the 1962 Brussels/London concerts...With James Clay...Dave Newman was busted in Paris for the latter...But amazing in Paris...
OR if you can't get this, try "Ray Charles in Berlin - 1962" - Pablo - Donald Wilkerson does most of the solos....and Johnny Coles is amazing...
RAY WAS JAZZ -AT THAT TIME ...Or at least. my version of it...

"Birth of Soul" is definitely the place to start. If you join yourmusic.com you can get it for less than $15, including shipping.

Another chime in for The Birth Of Soul, which I like a great deal better than the Country/Western material and just about anything else he released on ABC/Paramount. Those old Atlantics rocked the house.

My favorite collection of Brother Ray is on Atlantic "The Birth of Soul," a three disc set with all the great early hits plus very good liner notes.

Is any of The Birth of Soul on the Genius & Soul box set? I knew there was a three-CD comp out there I was supposed to be looking at...
Agh! Another one for the hitlist!

Yeah, some of it is. The only problem with the Genius & Soul box is that one and a half of the five discs cover the 70s and 80s for him. It's a problem because the material just ain't that great. I've been content with the Birth of Soul box, the Country & Western box, and the Ray Charles Anthology released on Rhino, which is a great single-disc comp of his sixties-seventies ABC/Paramount years, although now I want to check out Pete's rec.

Sure, Richard, twist the knife.
That album seemed to me at the time to be Ray's crossover from blues/jazz into almost rock. Even people who didn't necessarily dig the previous discs, loved that one, if only for the title track.

"Birth of Soul" has been highly discounted in the BMG Club of late.

PATRICIA...Marry me!
[OK., I may have to leave my present partner - Anna - but...NO PROBLEM !]
That Album [all of it.."You be my Baby/Don't tell me no maybe" ?"..and ROCKHOUSE] was magic ....and thro David Newman [in Paris} I met Trane and Dolphy and Elvin (in person) ... That again opened up a entire new world for me....1961/2....
OK, I have the tape of the 1961 concert in Paris !
Good enough?

Another Ray set I like is the "Ray Charles Story" on Atlantic. I have the 1962 two lp set. My favorite cut is a really, really long and really, really slow version of "Drown In My Own Tears."
