New York, NY (April 11, 2005) —The Smithsonian Institution has proclaimed April Jazz Appreciation Month throughout the United States. To kickoff the celebration in New York City, Jazz at Lincoln Center will send a combo of musicians, including members of Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, to perform live on the observation deck of the Empire State Building at 9:30am on April 12th.
Immediately following the sky-scraping concert, Jazz at Lincoln Center will light the sky a "cool blueÓ to honor the lives of great jazz artists born in April (such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Tito Puente, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Louie Armstrong, Charles Mingus and Billie Holiday), as it lights the Empire State Building for the evening of April 12th.
The Jazz combo will bring the art of swing and distribute strings of jazz beads, hot yellow umbrellas and thousands of NYC "Jazz Trail" maps of more than 60 jazz clubs to the visitors at the Observatory Deck of the Empire State Building, Times Square and Jazz at Lincoln Center's Home Frederick P. Rose Hall.
"There is no better place to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month than the WorldŐs Second Home and the nationŐs jazz capital,Ó said Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in the introduction to the Jazz Trail.
"We celebrate our history and the new generation of young emerging jazz artists who dedicate their heart and soul to become part of America's greatest indigenous art form," said Derek E. To celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month, Jazz at Lincoln Center, in association with NYC & Company and participating restaurants, hotels and clubs, will feature month long special offers, giveaways and discounts all around town.
