Barry White Recovering From Stroke

Barry White Suffers Stroke
Updated 11:15 PDT Tue, May 20 2003
Barry White's family has confirmed the singer suffered a stroke at the start of May. The stroke happened as 58-year-old White is awaiting a kidney transplant needed because of complications from years of chronic high blood pressure.
"My dad had surgery May 1 to place a catheter in his arm," his daughter Shahera White said. "He had a stroke ... that affected his speech and the right side of his body, but he is in great spirits.
"He's had a minor setback, but have no fear - he'll be fine. He will definitely be performing again."
White was hospitalized in August 1999 for a blood pressure problem that forced him to cancel several performances. He was undergoing dialysis treatment to stabilize his condition.

Man, I definitely wish the best and speediest recovery possible for Mr. White. I don't mean this disrespectfully at all, but these big guys gotta watch their weight and what they eat. Especially African-Americans, who tend to be at higher risk for hypertension and shit like that. It all ends up with kidney problems and strokes and heart disease. I remember reading something by Dick Gregory and he said he really feared for his people because the down-home soul food diet they were raised on is a killer.

I don't mean to preach or suggest he got what he deserved; I just want great artists to last as long as possible. So please get better, Barry White, and let us hear that smooth baritone again soon.

I just learned of Barry White's stroke a few days ago. First Luther Vandross, now Mr. Baritone.

Your sentiments shouldn't be misconstrued GG. They're from the heart and don't have a judgemental tone.

All the best to Barry and his family for a full and speedy recovery.
