Jazz Mandolin Project CD Premiere on Radio Free Jaazzzzz

The Jazz Mandolin Project will be releasing their latest CD "The Deep Forbidden Lake" in May

Jazz station Radio Free Jaazzzzz is proud to present the premiere of two songs from the CD

"My Litttle Brown Book" by Billy Strayhorn

"Tears" by Django Reinhardt

Tune in to Radio Free Jaazzzzz to hear these songs and more from great independent jazz artists.

Founded by mandolin virtuoso Jamie Masefield, The Jazz Mandolin Project is an improvisational trio with an ever evolving lineup of artists who perform creative innovative versions of modern and traditional jazz tunes, rock classics, acoustic-electric funk, celtic folk and world music. They push boundaries of jazz through wild experimentation. The trio is led by mandolinist Jamie Masefield, a onetime member of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Bill Milkowski of Jazz Times says “Like mandolinists Mike Marshall and David Grisman before him, Jamie Masefield is challenging notions of what that stringed instrument – forever associated with folk and bluegrass music – can do.” The latest incarnation of the Jazz Mandolin project is the CD “Deep Forbidden Lake”. Gil Goldstein, who also joined Masefield on the CD “Jungle Tango”, plays piano and accordion. Gil has performed and or arranged music with Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorious, and in 2004 won a Grammy for his arranging and producing on Michael Brecker's album “Wide Angles”. Greg Cohen, who has also performed with a varied host of musical luminaries including Ornette Coleman, Tom Waits, John Zorn and Bill Frisell, completes the trio on upright bass. “The Deep Forbidden Lake” CD released in 2005 is a collection of 12 of Masefield's favorite songs written by some of his favorite musicians: Django Reinhart, Billy Strayhorn and Ornette Coleman, Radiohead and Neil Young along with songs by Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits. Speaking more of thoughtful melodies and arrangements than grooves and exploration, this CD shows a whole new side to Masefield's mandolin playing. Performed in a setting unlike any previous Jazz Mandolin Project recordings “The Deep Forbidden Lake” is an acoustic lyrical CD.
