Silly tiffs from outside the alley

Green steps up Martin Short stunt

By ANN MARIE McQUEEN - Ottawa Sun

Tom Green picks fight with Martin Short

Ottawa's Tom Green is not known for letting go of a good gag. Or a bad one, for that matter.

And this time he wants nothing short of a public apology from his fellow Canadian comic Martin Short, who offended him four years ago by making fun of his cancer bout and does it again in the May issue of W magazine.

But after this week launching a "Martin Short is lame" campaign on his website, www.tomgreen.com, and endorsing a new, separate website dubbed www.martinshortislame, the wacky former hometown boy acknowledges he might be waiting awhile.

"It's been very cold from their camp," Green told the Sun yesterday, in an interview he recorded for his website. "I haven't heard any response from them. I don't even know really if they know about this going on, to be honest."

Green said he was surprised and "extremely upset" when he learned Short had told W he didn't get the joke that is his obnoxious Jiminy Glick character. Both sides seem to agree that in a segment for his Comedy Central show Primetime Glick, Green freaked when Short's clueless Glick character referred to his surgery and treatment for testicular cancer.

"And then I pretended to take a phone call during the answer," Short told W.

Green says he's glossing over cruel details of the story, which he recounted in exhaustive detail on his website for the third day in a row yesterday.

For his part, Short didn't return messages left at his home last night. His manager Bernie Brillstein was no longer speaking about the issue.

On Wednesday, Brillstein shot back at Green's campaign to the New York Post, saying the show's 59 other guests had no such problems.

"To walk off the show wasn't professional. Marty is the gentlest, nicest man I ever met and also the most talented. Tom Green wanted to walk off the show and that was fine," he says. "We didn't miss him."

Since Green first heard about Short's comments Tuesday and urged his fans to action, he says he's received pictures of them wearing "Martin Short is lame" T-shirts from all over the world.

The movement, he says, is now out of his control.

He also explained much of his dismay at Short-as-Glick, and Short talking about it now, is based on his previous admiration of the Hamilton-born actor.

"I grew up loving Martin Short," he writes. "I had read every book in existence about SCTV and watched every episode. I was a huge fan."

Lets see...Tom Green makes a career out of tasteless, shock humor and now decides that there are sensibilities that are sacred..i.e. HIS!

Gilda Radner made fun of her fight with cancer.

Andy Kaufman was supposedly upset because everyone thought his illness was another one of his gags.

Proof that girls are cooler than boys.

I've never heard of Tom Green. It looks like I haven't missed much.

Tom Greene is an acquired taste, which I never have acquired. His humour is elaborate gag-based.
I was mildly amused by the gag in which, while his parents were away, he painted their entire house PLAID. But, otherwise, he tends base his humour, if you can call it that, on subjects we all out-grew as pre-adolescents.

Martin Short, on the other hand, is genuinely, creatively funny and extremely talented, on many different levels.
This "tiff" won't even register on his radar screen.

Tempest in a teapot.
Get over it already, Tom [dubious talent] Greene. Tom should just be thankful that he has had any career at all, IMO.

At least celebrities have the excuse that a chronic and irrational need for attention is how they pay the bills.

What drives the denizens with similar disposition at our little neck of the net seems to be pure pathology.

The weird thing is that Tom made fun of his cancer, and the surgery. Even to the extent of video-ing the surgery and goofing on the whole thing.

If Tom Green and Adam Sandler both died today, I'd consider this a very good day.

Absolutely Steve. I continue to be amazed at how Martin Short can think on his feet. His Jiminy Glick character is totally improvised on the spot,Very difficult to do and Short is a master. I love the moment when whoever he is interviewing realizes that they are being put on. Sometimes they fall right into the spirit, but usually, to their chagrin, they get sucked right in. Hilarious!!
Also, not to be overlooked, his Katherine Hepburn and Brian Lynehan impressions. Brilliant!! Brian Lynehan, now dead, was a celebraty interviewer in Canada, who was worse than Larry King and Dick Cavett for name-dropping during his interviews. He also exuded a pompous ass quality that irritated the dickens out of me. Short has incorperated a lot of that and infused his characature with his own personality and, I agree, "Jiminy Glick" is one of his best characters.

Oh, add Pauly Shore to the "would not be missed" list.

i love this story with all the silliness and hypocrisy. i hope espn or somebody really picks up on this and calls them out. 1st, you can go to green and appeal to his manhood. the promoters need to get green to challenge martin short to a fight. i would pay to see that . i would love to see the two go at it on espn. 3 short rounds.

All my available betting folding currency is on Martin Short.
Tom Greene is looking at the day when everyone will realize that he has no idea what humour is.
Martin Short has always known and has developed his talent to a truly astounding degree. What has been seen of him is, I think, only the tip of his range.
Tom Greene is a one-trick pony.
A Greene/Short match would be totally unfair. No competition, IMO.

no nono nooo, it's not a battle of jokes night fight. it should be a genuine fist fight, boxing match, wrestling, whatever.... just two guys settling a score like men. one calling the other out.

catchalls-catchcan

tom green on espn calling short out with words like: 'whatsa matta, short, u a pussee. u chicken? peep peep peep, you a lil baby chicken, peep peep peep?'
long pause
short, "nobodee ... callss me ...a 'CHicken.' "

Not a fair fight, weight-wise. Short is a small man, around 130 pounds, with bars of lead in his pockets. Green has at least thirty pounds on him.
I say, no-holds-barred CHESS .
