STRANGE FRUIT (2002) is the first documentary exploring the history and legacy of the Billie Holiday classic. While many people assume Strange Fruit was written by Billie Holiday herself, it actually began as a poem by Jewish schoolteacher, Abe Meeropol. Directed and produced by Joel Katz, this documentary examines the history of lynching, the interplay of race, labor and the left and popular culture as forces that would give rise to the Civil Rights Movement. Original score by clarinetist, Don Byron. Following the film, Professor Angela Davis, author of "Blues Legacies & Black Feminism: Gertrude "Ma" Rainey, Bessie Smith, and Billie Holiday" (1998) will speak.

"Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue"
Friday April 22, 2005
8:00PM @ the Del Mar Theatre
1124 Pacific Avenue
Santa Cruz, CA
$8 Adv / $10 Door

In August, 1970 Miles Davis gave a mind-altering performance at the Isle of Wight attended by 600,000 people that forever changed the face of jazz. Jazz on Film will screen MILES ELECTRIC: A DIRRERENT KIND OF BLUE, directed by Academy Award winning filmaker Murray Lerner. Hear the concert of Miles with his electric band, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, Gary Bartz, and Airto as they unleash a musical barrage of staggering intensity. The film includes insightful interviews with those who were there and those who have been influenced by what happened there. Taken together these musicians paint a riveting picture of Miles' transformaton in the late 1960's from jazz icon to musical explorer who fused the iimprovisational spirit of jazz with influences from rock, soul, fnk, world, and folk music. Performing and speaking in the film is Chick Corea, who will be appearing at Kuumbwa Jazz Center Saturday April 23.
