Spam Links at the Alley!
What the heck is going on? Some spam program is turing key words in posts here into links to spam websites.
Do not click on any links in my post--I did not post links, but I have seen the words contact and home turn instantly into links to their bullshit websites.
Can this be stopped?

Jazzoo,
The word "contact" is not showing as a link in my post, not now anyway and not from my end.
Could it be that you have a virus that turns certain words to links on you PC?
This could apply to words appearing on this site whether on one of your posts or not.
Hope you get it sorted out. The internet's becoming a nightmare.
Regards
BD

I faintly remember this coming up somewhere before and that it is likely that your machine is infected, Jazzooo. As with burning dog, I see no links in your posts.
Slightly related, Lois, you may want to look at ways to suppress the links in the "Free..." threads that are beginning to clog up the classifieds section or be aware that it can get out of hand. Inserting links all over the place to increase google visability caused blogs a few problems.

It's not JazzCorner, it's your machine. You've inadvertently downloaded a virus like TopText or an equivalent. You can read about it here.

Thanks, all--I'm downloading AdAware right now. That explains a few things.
Larry, I think you deserve some kind of award for your new technique!

Well, I downloaded and installed AdAware, then quarantined 398 files or programs, and I'm still seeing words like 'thread' in Boston's post as a link. Damn.

Doug, I don't know if SpyBot is still freeware, but the combination of that and AdAware work for me.
That and antivirus software.

I use Zone Alarm, Pest Patrol, and Norton antivirus scanning programs. So far, they've protected me against all comers. Tens of thousands of attempts have been blocked, if I'm to believe their logs. And I do.
Amazing how many people are out there trying to put programs on other people's computers, including, by the way, several huge and respected newspapers that have printed countless articles about the dangers of privacy intrusion. I guess they figure their own intrusions are okay.

Still to this day have never received a single piece of spam, nor are viruses a problem. I feel like my machine is locked down pretty tightly.
Here's what I use:
AVG antivirus. After using that shitbag McAfee for a year, I gladly switched over to this freebie. They just released version 7.0
Worth it's weight in gold.

Ad-aware, which you have already downloaded. It's great for deep scanning your system which you should do about once a week.
But you should take TrickyDicky's advice and get SpyBot Search & Destroy to use for quicker, daily scans.

Now, want to avoid having to use either of those?
Then get Spyware Blaster. It blocks downloads from ever taking place. Works like a dream in the background, you never have to do a thing(except update it every now and then). I've had it on my nachine for a little over a year and can tell you it is rock solid. I don't even have to bother with Ad-aware and SpyBot S&D anymore.
