This is very sad news. .
He was only 58!. He must have been very young when he played on that Ayler session. I first got to know of him playing with Oscar Peterson in the 70's when he had a regular slot on UK television. He could adapt to most playing situations.
RIP - NHOP

this is so sad......
I was just listening to his record "Friends Forever" with Renee Rosnes, this weekend and noting how great a record it is...
I know he will be missed... Wonder how Oscar Peterson is feeling this morning....?

Very sad. In spite of his relative youth, he had a longh career, having been a prodigy. I feel fortunate that I had the opportunity to see him in duet with Mulgrew Miller. It was utterly engaging, and I felt that Mulgrew was the true heir to Kenny Drew in that context.

One of the warmest sounds ever.
I always looked forward to hearing a session on which he played.
That Getz quartet he was in with Joanne Brackeen was really something.

Ah, fuck. One of my favorites. Even to my unsophisticated ears, he was distinctive. Far too soon.

Cat plays with Albert Ayler and Teddy Wilson, he's got something really great happening. Very sad news indeed. I didn't realize he was so young.

Wow...this comes as a shocker.
What an huge talent.
So glad that I'm lucky enough to have seen him on a number of occasions.
Not to be forgotten is how he's been the anchor in Oscar Peterson's groups for some 30 years or more.
He and Joe Pass were extraordinary together...we can go on and on
RIP NHOP

My wife put on "Friends Forever" on Monday night, and I was just marvelling at his tone, ideas, and playing.
Really a loss for the jazz world.
Niels, we hardly knew ya.

Copenhagen - the Danish jazz bassist Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen died
in the age of 58 years, reported the press agency Ritzau on Wednesday
in Copenhagen. On 26 May 1946 as a son of a church musician in the
locality Osted born Dane and the technically outstanding bassists in
the jazz, leading world-wide, applied for the sixties as one.
Pedersen lived with its family in a suburb west of Copenhagen. It
played already starting from its 14. Lebensjahr with prominent Danish
jazz musicians together and participated in several hundred records as
well as CD bringing in. He co-operated thereby with numerous legendary
jazz sizes such as OSCAR Peterson, Dexter Gordon, Sonny roll in, Bill
Evans, Bud Powell, Dizzy Gillespie, COUNT Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and
Joe passport. 1990 were awarded to him the music price of the Nordi
advice. For the nineties Pedersen played also in a Trio under own name
with the Swedish guitarist Ulf Wakenius as well as changing guest
musicians together.
Because of its very long name Pedersen in its Danish homeland called
itself NHOEP predominantly. In the English-language jazz world it often
"The great Dane with the never endings name" ("the large Dane with the
endless name") called. Pedersen completed a very intensive concert
program with constant journeys abroad over decades.
