The TD Canada Trust Ottawa International Jazz Festival (OIJF) is pleased to announce the concert line-up for this year’s 25th Anniversary summer festival taking place from June 23 – July 3, 2005.
This summer, the OIJF opens up its ten-day concert line-up with multi-Grammy award winner Harry Connick, Jr. This superstar will join the National Arts Centre Orchestra under the direction of Jack Everly to open the 25th anniversary celebrations on June 23 in Confederation Park.
Following on June 24, Hugh Fraser, noted musician, composer and teacher will premiere his new jazz work, commissioned especially by the jazz festival for its 25th anniversary. The “Canadian Suite” will feature the Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation (VEJI), also celebrating its 25th anniversary, for jazz improvisation.
The rest of the Under the Stars Concert Series line-up, which reads like a who’s who of jazz artists, includes David Murray and the Gwo-Ka Masters Creole Project, tenor saxophonist legend Sonny Rollins, 50 year jazz veteran Benny Golson, Grammy award winner Diana Krall, Doug Wamble, Terence Blanchard, Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers, David Sanchez, Joshua Redman and a special Trio! of Stanley Clarke, Béla Fleck and Jean-Luc Ponty.
Connick, Jr. will also perform with Branford Marsalis in a world premiere performance of Occasion at the Library and Archives Canada for two shows at 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Friday, June 24th as part of the 25th Anniversary Concert Series.
Our Great Canadian Jazz Series will once again feature great artists from across this country including Mark Ferguson, Hugh O’Connor, Lorraine Desmarais: le Big Band, Blues Gitan, Michel Côté Lapon Baleze, Quatour Jean-Pierre Zanella Quartet, Flight of Whimsy, Bernard Primeau Montréal Jazz Ensemble and the Galaxie contest winners.
The National Arts Centre (NAC) will be hosting the Studio Series, with late night performances by artists such as Sweden’s Jonas Kullhammar, Andrew Scott Sextet, Ensemble en pièces, Octurn, Atomic, Quartertones, Sophie Milman, Steve Haines Quintet, a special trio featuring Normand Guilbeault, Jean Derome and Pierre Tanguay, and Robert Marcel Lepage’s tribute to Pee Wee Russell.
The Connoisseur Series at the National Library of Canada will offer an intimate setting of jazz music that includes Ed Thigpen Scantet, Mountin Réunion Quartet, Bud Shank and Bill Mays, Dave Young Mainly Mingus, BED, Jon Ballantyne 4tet, Lynn Arriale trio, Adrian Cho’s Impressions in Jazz Nonet and the Avishai Cohen Trio
Jazz Meets the World returns again this year with artists such as The Herbaliser, Bonobo, Gangbé Brass Band and Sakesho.
The Mark Ferguson Trio will be playing daily shows at 10:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn’s Late Night Jamming Series.
New to this year’s festival is the Improv Invitational Series, a series highlighting artists who have established their reputations as the most highly regarded improvisers in the world of jazz. The series will be held at the NAC’s Fourth Stage and performing will be Normand Guilbeault, Evan Parker, Roscoe Mitchell, Matthew Bourne and Queen Mab. Parker and Bourne are being presented with the support of the British Council.
