Evan Parker with Susie Ibarra

listening to the recording I was sent of their 4/11/01 concert brings me back to a night about a month later at the Knitting Facory when I had a coffee with Evan Parker before two blistering sets with Tim Berne, Drew Gress and Mark Sanders

listening this morning to Susie with him, behind him and by herself brings the new world of mine into clear focus as to what I missed and what I have today - I have never heard her like this (and this is my third time listening to this) - recorded like I was there - the range and pure joy in her playing - and she is playing jazz - and here he is too - makes me think that I kinda know what they are going to play - but when they play it - it is somehow much more when it is played - the scope of her 11 minute solo piece in the center of the disc is just too much for words - swing, groove, intensity - all with a looseness and touch that is pretty much unsurpassed in drumming today - and man - I always loved her playing - but this morning with the clarity I have had for the past few day - lordy lordy - she could have played for an hour and it might still have me wanting to hear more

and Evan, my god, Evan - the three tenor improvs with Susie as his partner - clarity and volcanic power and an almost mathematical precision scream through his horn - controlled fury - with a power that is really beyond melody and even beyond what is heard with Eddie Prevost on Most Materiall - and the last track - with the popping of the keys leading to the rush of air - to the perfect coda that even surpasses what I think is possible to come from a horn - or from an instrument - or from a human being - and these thoughts and feeling are coming from me - a long time (relative) listener to may my favorite saxophonist of any time - just beauty and grace that is beyond my ability to express to others - these days - brings me back to my dreams about life...

sure wish He was coming in June - but god willing there will be another day - listening this morning taook all the edge off of not being able to go see Joe Maneri tonight - man what a day it is today for me.....

At The Vortex, baby

Thanks, my friend, I'm in the same boat (no burner).

I'll be thinking of U on my B'day, which happens to be June 16. Sure wish I could be THERE!
