Cal Poly’s Jazz Night is ‘Musically Incorrect’
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly's jazz ensembles are planning the most unusual concert of the year with some of the most implausible music ever arranged for big band at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 14 in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center.
The annual Jazz Night will feature such unlikely music arranged for big band as “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin, “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple, “Enter Sandman” by Metallica, and “Paradise City” by Guns 'n Roses.
“These arrangements offer a wildly different perspective on the original compositions, sometimes with hilarious results,” said Paul Rinzler, the Music Department's director of jazz studies. “Several of the arrangements appear on one of the most category-defying albums of recent times: singer Pat Boone’s heavy-metal big-band album, ‘In a Metal Mood.’ Two of these arrangements will receive their world premiere as a live performance at this concert.”
Cal Poly's University Jazz Bands, Jazz Combo and Cal Poly Vocal Jazz will perform.
Tickets to Jazz Night cost $5 to $15. They can be bought at the Performing Arts Ticket Office 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (756-2787).
Jazz Night is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department, the College of Liberal Arts, and the Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information call the Music Department at 756-2406.
