I'm surprised
Bob Alberti didn't post this himself, but he sent to me and so I send it along
A telephone call on the evening of Wednesday, April 27th, 2005 informed us that as of the previous day, the Hilton Head Jazz Society has closed its doors. This was, for many years a cohesive society, built by jazz afficianados with loving care. A myriad of fine artists performed each month for the past nineteen years, and the ranks of the membership swelled to an excess of six hundred.
Approximately one year ago, there was a shuffle of the board of directors, whose responsibility it was to call the shots on programming, dues and everything related to the funcionality of the society, especially the public relations and advertising of upcoming events. The ball was continually dropped, and it didn't take long for the society to implode. A decision was made to almost double the annual membership which seemed to seal the fate of the organization. Stubborness and egos managed to contribute a great portion of what led up to its demise.
Regretfully, a musical haven that took nineteen years to build has been recklessly destroyed in less than one.
R.I.P., Hilton Head Jazz Society. Condolences to all the former presidents and board members.
