Terri Lyne Carrington named Artistic Director

Berklee Offers New Elite Summer Jazz Workshop
During Five-Week Summer Performance Program, July 9-August 12,
Artistic Director Terri Lyne Carrington to Lead Ensemble

Boston, MA, May 2, 2005 – Berklee College of Music has offered the
Five-Week Summer Performance Program since 1987, giving high school
students the opportunity to study jazz, pop, rock, funk, fusion, and
R&B. This year the Five-Week Summer Performance Program is
inaugurating the Berklee Summer Jazz Workshop, a special program for
the best and brightest high school jazz players from around the world
who have recently auditioned for Berklee. All students selected for
the program will receive full scholarships and housing, and will take
special courses in addition to some of the Five-Week classes. The
program's Artistic Director, acclaimed drummer Terri Lyne Carrington,
will lead the students in an ensemble, which is planning several
concert performances.

The Summer Jazz Workshop was initiated by Berklee president Roger H.
Brown, offering scholarships with the goal of providing top-notch music
instruction to talented high school students who might not otherwise be
able to attend. Says Bob Doezema, Associate Director of the Five-Week
Program, “We are committed to providing talented young musicians with
the most comprehensive and rigorous program for jazz performance. We
want high school students to know that Berklee is the place to be to
study and play jazz at the highest level.” The instrumentation for the
first Summer Jazz Workshop will be three horns, a four-piece rhythm
section, and a vocalist. However, the lineup may vary from year to
year, depending on the specific talents of the musicians chosen.

Students attending the Summer Jazz Workshop will be immersed in all
aspects of performance, including playing in ensembles, developing
improvisational and reading skills, and improving technique. They will
also attend lectures and clinics by the workshop faculty, which, in
addition to Carrington, includes Tiger Okoshi, Rick DiMuzio, John
Lockwood, Jeff Stout, and Daryl Lowery. Says Carrington, “I am very
excited about working with the students in taking their musical dreams
a little further. I am reminded of my own experience as a young
up-and-coming musician getting my feet wet under the tutelage of many
great teachers at Berklee, so this is full circle for me, and I plan to
give back with the same integrity and commitment. Having worked
closely with the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz Ensemble, a
collegiate program of similar nature, I have seen incredible growth
from this kind of intensive study.”

Terri Lyne Carrington, a native of Medford, MA, developed a reputation
as a child prodigy, jamming with Dizzy Gillespie, Rahsaan Roland Kirk,
Oscar Peterson, and many more. At age 11 she received a full
scholarship to Berklee, where she played with Kevin Eubanks, Mike
Stern, and Branford Marsalis, among others. In 1983 she moved to New
York and worked with Stan Getz, Lester Bowie, Pharoah Sanders,
Cassandra Wilson, and David Sanborn. Carrington later became the
drummer for The Arsenio Hall Show, and the TV show Vibe. She spent
seven years on tour with Herbie Hancock and has also toured with Wayne
Shorter, Joe Sample, and Al Jarreau. In addition to being an in-demand
side player and producer, Carrington has released the albums Jazz Is A
Spirit, Structure, and the Grammy-nominated Real Life Story.
Carrington will be a visiting professor in the Percussion department
during the 2005-2006 academic year.

Berklee College of Music was founded on the revolutionary principle
that the best way to prepare students for careers in music was through
the study and practice of contemporary music. For over half a century,
the college has evolved constantly to reflect the state of the art of
music and the music business. With over a dozen performance and
nonperformance majors, a diverse and talented student body representing
over 70 countries, and a music industry "who's who" of alumni, Berklee
is the world's premier learning lab for the music of today — and
tomorrow.

I'm with you JM. TLC is a drummin' dynamo. I knew she got started young, but I didn't know she actually attended Berklee at 11! Quick aside: I wonder who the youngest Berklee (Jazz) student in history is.

Anyway, congrats TLC, lucky students!

Way to go Terri Lyne!! I've only seen her once, hmmm, maybe twice. Anyway, she's a great drummer, and the added bonus is that she's a girl!

Yeah!

TLC is one of my very favorite drummers! I first saw her when she was a young teenager at what used to be the annual Jackie Robinson Festival at his estate in Connecticut. I must name-drop and say that Joe Williams introduced me to her and her father, Sonny Carrington way back then. I also attended her honorary doctorate ceremony at Berklee a couple of years ago. She's the best, even though Thelonious was spelled incorrectly in her quote!! LOL!!

Although Terri Lynne has been playing since she was a tyke, she didn't enter Berklee until she was 17, not 11. The only reason I know this is because we attended the same year (1982-83) and she's a year younger than me. Must've been a typo.

Also, Branford, Stern, and Eubanks were no longer students by that time. I don't doubt she played with them but they would've been professional gigs. Not the context of jamming with fellow classmates.

Anyway, who cares! She's a great drummer. congrats and best of luck to her.

whew. terri and her band of young phenoms raised the roof tonite at san diego city college. great arrangements, solos, surprises. and luckily some nice long, explosive, virtuosic drum solos.

she greeted fans from the edge of the stage after the gig, and wanted to pass along a hello to "her girl" val.
