Damn straight, Upchurch is a 2, through either George Benson, or half a dozen cats off Grover Washington Jr.'s "Mister Magic". Makes Howlin' Wolf and all sorts of bluesmen 3's...

Holy Christ, Erskine takes you as many places as Jerry Hey. Also, MF and Doc Severinsen were together with Charlie Barnet's band in the late 40s. Doc picks up everyone else who didn't play with Erskine...

And one of Frank rehak's first gigs? Charlie Barnett!

Aren't we concluding that ALL jazz musicians are at most a few handshakes away from all others?

Yup ..but keep in mind:

I made no claims about hearing King Oliver go " boop -boop -she -doobey -doobey - doot -doot-doot " .. like some others seem to have *channeled*..

neither to my knowledge, had Greg ..

Nat - got you down to a four, all through recorded material. Peter Erskine and Evan Parker were both in on Kenny Wheeler's "Music for Large and Small Ensembles", so the thread is:

MF - Erskine - Parker - Prevost - NC

Or to put it another way, you and MF both have Parker numbers of two. Small world.

Well done Bostontricky. Pretty scary, but it's interesting.

My musical career can fairly be described in terms of me being a never-was - but I assume I can make it to Maynard (thru Erskine?) within 5 because I once was onstage with Jaco at an after-hours jam.

Etta James is at worst a 3 (through Phil Upchurch). Dave Alvin's gotta be a three. Rollins is the wildcard here, anyone care to take a stab...

Mone - I've got Rollins as a 4, through Alex Acuna, Deborah Harry and Iggy Pop.

P.S. How's your playoff beard?
