New York City Jazz Scene, Part II
Since the first part had over 1,000 posts, I'd thought I'd start part II. Later, I'll post about seeing the Mingus Dynasty at the Brooklym Academy of Music and then hearing Robert Glasper at Smalls. Since we're on the the topic, I just quickly want to say that Damion Reid is one very, very bad mother-f***er!!! I haven't seen a drummer with his chops, sense of dynamics, creativity and sensitivity to the music in a long while! I can't wait to hear him again!
More later...but I just had to get that out, I'm so excited about hearing this extraordinary drummer. Gary, I did mention you to him, he totally remembered you very fondly and specifically asked that I say "hi" to you from him.

They played for another hour.
I can't remember what they opened the set with, but they played
Sue's Changes
Invisible Lady (an obscure ballad I was unfamiliar with. Herwig mentioned that Elvis Costello recorded it with one of the bands, and Conrad took a beautiful solo).
A tune from Mingus Dynasty--I think it was New Now, Know How--with Earl McIntyre guesting on bass trombone
& they ended with Boogie Stop Shuffle as a head-only outro.
The trumpeter, Kenny Rampton, was new to me. Good player with a sound that fits the music well. Seamus Blake is an excellent player, but too perfect for my taste. Jaleel Shaw is rougher around the edges, but more interesting, IMO.

Jaleel is the man! I just loves me some Jaleel! He has the capacity to play with enormous sweetness and sensitivity and at the same time exhibiting lots of strength. just my two cents.

Vipassana by Joseph C. Phillips Jr.
hey jcers - just letting you know about a group that i am performing with on Wednesday. You must check out Joe's compositions if you haven't yet. They are absolutely stunning! - julie
Vipassana
by Joseph C. Phillips Jr.
performed by Numinous+
Wednesday May 11th
8:00 PM
Renee Weiler Concert Hall
at the Greenwich House Music School
46 Barrow Street
in Greenwich Village, New York City

The composition is a new 4-movement, 70 minute work entitled, Vipassana. In the Pali language of the early Buddhist texts, vipassana means "to see things as they really are" or insight. Vipassana will be conducted by Mr. Phillips and performed by an expanded Numinous ensemble of 25 musicians. Normally Numinous is a 14 person chamber group (string quartet, woodwinds, brass, percussion) and features music that combines modern 'classical' music and 'jazz' improvisational elements.
Partly inspired by some of the nature photographs from Yann Arthus-Bertrand's Earth from Above series and the poetry (in the final movement) of Denise Levertov, Vipassana is an experience of expressive beauty and emotional depth that hopes to represent those moments of clarity and calmness which reveal "the inner nature of all beings and things."
Featuring these wonderful musicians:
Ben Kono-flute, alto flute, piccolo, clarinet, alto saxophone, soprano saxophone,
oboe, English horn
Dan Willis-flute, piccolo, clarinet, tenor saxophone, English Horn, oboe
Ed Xiques-flute, alto flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, baritone saxophone

) you can hear Damion again, in a completely different context with Ergo at the Knitting Factory Tap Bar on June 6th.

Jazz Standard, tonight & tomorrow. I might try to make the early show tomorrow:
TUE - WED MAY 10 -11
Billy Bang's Aftermath Band with Special Guests
Butch Morris (May 10) and Sonny Fortune (May 11)
Billy Bang – violin [Sergeant E5]
John Hicks – piano
Ted Daniel – trumpet [Specialist 4th Class]
James Spaulding – alto saxophone, flute
Curtis Lundy – bass
Michael Carvin – drums [Specialist 4th Class]
Ron Brown – percussion [Specialist 4th Class]
Nhan Thanh Ngo – dan tranh
Co Boi Nguyen – voice
Jazz Standard and Justin Time Records celebrate the release of Vietnam: Reflections—the new album by violinist and composer Billy Bang, and the successor to his revelatory 2001 release Viet Nam: The Aftermath. Both works are rooted in Bang’s experiences as a combat veteran of the Vietnam War, and both draw upon harmonic elements of jazz, blues, and Vietnamese folk music. “To write eloquently of my trials and tribulations, of growing from a boy of nineteen and becoming a man, a soldier in that God-forsaken war, has been a supreme challenge...I can honestly say that I’ve recovered the innocence of my spirit and soul again.” (Billy Bang)

Not a concert, but a film screening of potential interest, on Wednesday, May 25 at Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theater, 6:30 and 8:45pm, $10, students $7, children $5. (I might try to make the early show, but it'll be cutting it close since I have tickets to an 8pm concert nearby...)
CECIL TAYLOR: ALL THE NOTES
Series: Special Event: Cecil Taylor
Director: Chris Felver, Country: USA, Release: 2005, Runtime: 72 min Cecil Taylor is one of the most original, exciting and influential figures in modern jazz. In fact, he seems almost too big to be pegged to any one genre, so bountiful are his compositions and his playing — almost any given Taylor piece seems to contain the entire history of music.
Bay Area filmmaker Chris Felver, who has been photographing and filming poets, artists and musicians for years, has made a wonderfully free and intimate portrait of Taylor at work and at play, sharing his passion for the music of others and exploring the ingredients of his own artistic vision. We are proud to be presenting the New York premiere of Felver’s film.
Director Chris Felver and some special guests will be present to introduce the film and take questions after the screening.

Hi, Mary -- Cool. I'd missed your post because I only very randomly drop in on this thread, since it is a kind of torture, knowing what all is going on and not being able to check it out. :-)
Damion said he'd met you and that you'd extended my greetings, and also that he'd found you a very friendly and supportive of the music kind of gal.
I agree with you about his being a great up-and-coming drummer, who will likely now start getting more, very deserved attention, with Robert Glasper having been signed to Blue Note. He says they are recording Glasper's first BN date this weekend, in fact.
I look forward to hearing it, very much. Signing Glasper raised up the current BN a couple of notches in my estimation.
People who haven't heard it ought to do themselves a real favor and pick up Glasper's *Mood* (Fresh Sounds New Talent).
Mary -- Damion and I met through Brett, when they came through here to play, but then we followed through on it because we dug each other. We bonded pretty well when he and a friend came up here to Vermont, to hang out at our place for three or four days. We had a lot of fun, and he got to do some major relaxing, as this is a low pressure zone in which to hang. He's also one of only a very few of the cats whose really been interested in the rural aspects of our life, here, as opposed to the musical and more cosmo aspects of hanging out with us around the house for conversation and partying and such. He dug the horses, and the land, and the building of the barn, and all of that. Hung out in a cold barn freezin' his ass while I did my horsework and such. We had a great time and will again, I'm sure. Thanks for saying hi. It caused another eruption of e-communications. I'm glad you'll be following his career.

Hey Gary,
Damion's made a bunch of my gigs here. Especially at Barbes. I have to confess that I don't get out to hear him as much as I should with other people but I always enjoy being around him. As usual, I find a great drummer that I love to play with and who seems to enjoy playing my music and they up and get all famous on me!
Heh.

Julie Hardy @ Sweet Rhythm May 31
Hello Everyone -
Just wanted to invite y'all to my gig at Sweet Rhythm on May 31 sets 8 and 10. I recently released my debut cd "A Moment's Glance" on Fresh Sound New Talent and received a positive review in Jazz Times (which Other Steve so nicely posted last week).
Joel Frahm will be my special guest along with Randy Ingram, piano; Matt Clohesy, bass (can also be heard with Geoff Keezer and Ingrid Jensen); and Danny Fischer, drums. Pete C and Jazzy Mary came out last month to check out my gig at the Jazz Standard and gave me some wonderful comments (which i have kept in mind for my this performnance). Thanks guys!
Hope to meet some more of folks in the NY Scene on the 31st.

Sorry, I'm late with everything as work, home etc. has been so busy. I wasn't thrilled w/ Billy--neither was Liz. He's ok. Some nice cymbal work--but nothing breathtaking. Bobby was uneffingbelievable, as you can always assume. Really, he's just so amazing---a weird cat, but amazing! Dwayne's playing was fantastic!! I am so happy to say that his playing has come back Full force! He played some wonderful, wonderful, interesting, musically complex, deep solos and his keeping the thing going was great!! Mike LeDonne was wonderful too. His wife and baby were there too. We went first set Sunday night and the place was jammed. At one point our Mr. Crouch came in, as he usually does on Sundays.
Mr. Burno was a sweetheart, per usual, to put Liz and I on the guest list--he's very sweet to Liz and is genuinely interested in her music. She would like to start playing vibes, but she is already tackling 4 instruments and where am I gona put a vibraphone? ALthough I would love to play too.
We talked to D for awhile and I gave him the Stevie Wonder box set "At the End of the Century" (He didn't have it!!!) which I had gotten for him off my BMG record club for cheaper than we could find it elsewhere. As a "bonus" cd I gave him a surprise (He didn't know what I had picked out) and that was a Mitsuko Uchida cd of Schubert compositions.
Sorry, Robin, I'll have to tackle Glasper's gig later. But, I've already mentioned Damion Reid's drummin--the revelation of the night for me!
