Ella Fitzgerald - Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie!

This, IMHO, is an excellent CD. It was recorded in 1960 and Ella's voice has a little bit more of a gritty "edge" to it than in her earlier recordings, but that is not a bad thing. The CD swings on every song. All of the tracks are excellent, but IMHO the two that stand out the most are "Cry Me a River" (not a song you would associate with Ella but she does a fantastic job) and "Music Goes 'Round and Around."

I give it a A+!!

Fine album, which I have on vinyl and therefore haven't heard in 13 years. Grrr. Small combos with Herb Ellis.

Theophilus: I do a singing call to the title cut, but I'm missing a key line and can't seem to run down the lyrics. Help me out here -- what's the missing line?

"Gingerale and white rock for his table.
???????????????????
Let him sit right next to Mable!"

Why not get it on CD?

The line is "grab a chair, move over there."

Thanks!

I always keep hoping that one day I'll again have the space to spread out and rehabilitate my vinyl, so I'm always reluctant to duplicate. Nevertheless, 13 years and counting is a long time, and I do wind up replacing my vinyl with CDs over and over again; so I will put this one on the active To Get list. It *was* one of my favorites by Ella, because of the smaller, jazzier group, especially when compared with the lush, more pop oriented renditions from the Songbooks.

A+ from me too for this fine album. Theophilus, let me also strongly recommend, if you don't know it yet, "The Intimate Ella," a 1960 album of duets with pianist Paul Smith. It's an interesting update on the duets with Ellis Larkins a decade earlier - her voice is older, deeper, the delivery more measured and stately. It's one my favorites. And , later still, don't miss the duets with Joe Pass, either!

Oh, yes! The Intimate Ella is on my To Get list. (has been for a while actually.) I would also like to at some point get the CDs with Joe Pass... so many CDs to get, so little cash... ;-)

Steve, it is worth getting the CD just for the bonus tracks. "This Could be the Start of Something Big" especially! :-)

This is one of my fave Ellas too. I had it in vinyl and then finally it came out on cd about 10 years ago. I'm not that old, guys, it's just that I was buying Ella records at a very young age, like our fellow Theo here. I absolutely love her version of "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most".

lol... ;-)

Yeah, that song is really nice. People who say that Ella could not put melancholy or depth into her singing need to go and listen to it. ;-)
