Keith Jarrett - Radiance - ECM - 2005

I'm a big fan of Keith Jarrett. Il really like all is solo effort.

My first experience with his music was The Köln Concert. When i heard this one, I was not in love automatically. I need more practice to understand. When i listened the Paris Concert, i know i 'll be a fan. I was in another world. After, it was La Scala. Great record!

I enjoy a lot is special project like Spirits or Arbour Zena (with Garbarek, Haden & more).

Sometimes, a fan should say what is feeling even when it's bad. This one is call Radiance and it is not for me. In the linernote, Jarrett advice the listener that the melody isn't clear, sometimes missing and some will have a shock. Yes, i'm disapointed. Did someone like it?

P.S.: I know that the media seems to like it! Maybe I'm a stranger misunderstood.

Ditto freetoo I did not like this at first listen... Granted there are parts of it that are great.... but I'm inclined to wait awhile and give it another listen or two in a month or so... Hope my initial opinions change...

And I'm sure you board veterans know "frankiepop" and understand what the hell he/she is talking about... but I find it a bit bizarre and offensive...

Personally, I find him to be very dull, but not offensive.

f.t.j: it has nothing to do with Jarrett or for that matter with you, it's just that frankiepop likes to throw mudpies at me every so often. The reference is to some public comments I made a year or so ago about Thom Jurek (the widely disliked reviewer on AMG), & a recent thread where I posted a piece by Russell Smith from the Globe & Mail where Smith said that all of jazz was crap except for Keith Jarrett (& that Jarrett should stop playing jazz standards, for that matter). -- The problem is that these obsessive doppelganger guys like f.pop or Uli tend to assume that everyone knows their personal feuds & beefs, so they can make some cryptic posting just any old place & it's obvious enough what & who it refers to.

Uli, f'pop et al: well, if you feel like taking umbrage, how about PMing me or starting the obligatory flame thread or whatever elsewhere, & leaving poor Freetoojazz's thread alone. It's rare enough lately that there's discussion of a new release in the Record Reviews forum, so it'd be a shame if the thread got instantly derailed.

Yeah, you sometimes simply have to persist, Freetoojazz, the superfluous blows away, eventually.

One can only hope. I mean even you, Jesse, if you continue on this thread would eventually have to say something deep.

Cool, Jesse.

At least I had a reason to post on this thread (Nate's unwarrented namecalling). You on the otoh seem to have only one "misssion" here. To divide people into good and bad posters.

Let's talk music:

Radiance Part I: I don't appreciated the beginning. Suspended start, some beautiful pearl at 6 minutes. Introspective feeling at 10 minutes.

Part II: More classical approach than jazz.

Part III: More lyrical than the Part I and II. Reminds me some part of the Scala concert.

Part IV: I have trouble with this one. I can't connect to the music.

Part V: Thanks, more peaceful! But strange feeling.

Part VI: I really like all the Part VI.

Part VII: I have trouble with this one too.

Part VIII: Bring me more melodic one like this part.

Part IX: Something missing. Still like searching something that didn't exist.

Part X: Not bad, not good.

Part XI: This one have some king of swing in it. That's good to ears, but the part is too short.

Part XII: The bucklet beat, this one I like.

Part XIII: A Happy ending for all the concert of Ossaka.

Part 14-Part 17: The Tokyo concert. I just like the Part 17. The Part 14, 15 and 16 didn't carry me to the beautiful land of music.

Like you say Dizmon, maybe i'll be appreciate more later. This is not all the disc that i didn't like, but some part of it.

FreeToo,

I appreciate your summation!

I don't yet own this album, but as a huge Keith Jarrett fan, I can dig what you have stated here.

Welcome to the site, and please stick around. We're a contentious bunch of assholes, but we mean well.

oh listen to nate, he's the leads off by derailing the thread and using it to merely extend his dirty smith diatribe. ...yet he calls for focusing on the subject while he has yet to say a thing about the music.

I can't be in complete disagreement with you here. To me, Jarrett is certainly overrated, especially if you take into account he hasn't really done anything new since the mid-eighties (I mean, the trio's good, but that project is more than 20 years old!). However, I highly respect his work, especially the versatility he had in the 70's-80's (the two quartets, solo projects, semi-classical works, interpretations of classical works (Bach, Mozart,...), and eventually the trio). I don't own much of his recordings, and mostly on Lp, but I have special affection for his old quartet albums, especially The Survivors' Suite and Personal Mountains. I think he's releasing too much stuff for all of it to be interesting.

I thought Keith Jarrett was mainly famous for his singing, but his piano playing seems to have grown over the years.
