Hi-tech” Among The Highlights Of “hot Jazz – 6 Cool Nites”

HI-TECH” AMONG THE HIGHLIGHTS OF “HOT JAZZ – 6 COOL NITES” CONCERTS

NAPERVILLE, ILL --- Each of the six “Hot Jazz - 6 Cool Nites” concerts presented the week of July 22-28 at North Central College will offer a different combination of featured jazz artists and musical selections to make each evening’s performance distinctive. The concerts, jointly sponsored by North Central College and the First National Bank of Naperville with radio sponsorship from 90.9fm WDCB Public Radio from College of DuPage, will begin each evening at 8:00 p.m. in Heininger Auditorium, Larrance Academic Center, 309 E. School Street, Naperville.
The concert series is presented in conjunction with the Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp, a highly acclaimed educational workshop which has been featured on the nationally televised PBS news program “The News Hour with Jim Lehrer,” WGN-TV, WTTW Chicago Public Television and HDNET-TV.
This year new computer-based conferencing technology will bring an additional dimension to the event. This technology allows users to make a live, real-time audio and video connection with other users, anywhere in the world. On Wednesday, July 27 the Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp will use this technology to join forces with the KOSA International Percussion Workshop in Castleton, Vermont (www.kosamusic.com). This video conferencing event will be the first to connect two music camps in this way, and will prove to be an exciting exploration for their respective concert audiences. For the concert performance that evening a large screen will be set up in Heininger Auditorium and the audience in Naperville will be able to see, hear and interact in real time with the staff artists of the KOSA camp performing in Vermont, while at the same time the audience in Castleton will be able to see and hear the Borla camp staff artists perform.
The series itself will open on Friday, July 22 and Saturday, July 23 with the entire vocal jazz camp artist faculty: Blujazz Records recording artist Janice Borla, Judy Niemack of Sony Jazz Records, and Sunnyside recording artist Jay Clayton, joined by trumpeter/ vocalist Floyd Standifer, pianist Dan Haerle, bassist Bob Bowman, drummer Jack Mouse and guitarist Jeanfrancois Prins.
Monday through Wednesday, July 25-27, two of the three vocalists will be featured in various combinations both individually and together, backed by Standifer, Prins, Haerle, Bowman and Mouse: Borla and Clayton on Monday; Clayton and Niemack on Tuesday; and on Wednesday, Borla and Niemack. On Thursday, July 28, all eight artists will once again join to present a special “Tribute to Miles Davis,” performing music composed by and associated with the celebrated jazz trumpeter.
“What makes this series so unique,” says Janice Borla, the camp’s founder, “is the wide range of jazz material and vocal performance styles it encompasses. Because this series was originally created for the benefit of the vocal jazz camp participants, our intention is to present the widest possible variety of jazz repertoire -- blues, standards, bebop tunes, Brazilian and contemporary jazz -- as performed by three singers with distinctly different vocal styles and backed by world-class instrumentalists.”
In honor of the camp and concert series, Naperville Mayor George Pradel will proclaim July 22-29 “Vocal Jazz Week.” The proclamation recognizes the camp, “which has gained an international reputation as one of vocal jazz’s most prestigious and unique events.” The Mayor “urges all residents to support this assemblage of world-class jazz vocalists and instrument-alists who will be performing in Naperville, Illinois during this week.”
Presenting sponsor for the event is the First National Bank of Naperville. Media sponsorship is provided by the Daily Herald and 90.9 FM, WDCB Public Radio from College of DuPage. Equipment and services provided by Brookdale Music, Shure Brothers Inc. and Yamaha Corporation of America.
Tickets to the concerts are $15.00 for adults and $12.00 for students/senior citizens. A 5-night concert pass can also be purchased for $60.00 (adults) or $48.00 (students/seniors). For concert ticket reservations and further information, contact the Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp at 630-637-5620.
