Helpful books?

Got some friends that are looking for books that specifically talk about 2-5-1 changes and beyond (i.e. licks from greats like Wes, Grant, and all the other monsters).

any recommendations?

Aebersold Vol.3!

Well,if you want to check out books about how to play jazz, check out Jamey Abersold...

HIs vol.3 book is made for working on II-V-I and is simply great. For more information visit his website http://www.jazzbooks.com

But if you want specific II-V-I licks of the greats, buy some transcription books of those monsters and look for II-V-I changes!

alto has some good ideas there, mos def. also, there's a book by jerry coker called 'improvising jazz' that's good to get started and also has stuff for people that have been playing for a long time. very cool, well-tought-out, terse little book on playing jazz. the best i've come across IMHO. and actually fun to read. as for alto's suggestion for buying transcription books, get the omnibook. it's a no brainer. plus, it's got the harmonies written in there for ya so you can just shoot right to some ii-V's and get the master's shit! of course, get the recordings of them as well if you can. hearing them is key. peace.

hey baise. i have a suggestion for you but it's not an 'educational' book by any means. "bad behavior" by mary gaitskill. a collection of short stories that reads like a novella. most of the stories have/revolve around sexual situations, some pretty extreme, but all dealt with very honestly (brutally honest) and with meaning beyond most of the crap that comes out these days called 'modern fiction.' the stories mostly deal w/ our inability to truly connect w/ one another. at least one (2-3 i think) of the stories revolve around prostitutes. this is one of my favorite books. read it from beginning to end (don't 'skip around') to get the most from it. also, her novel "two girls - one fat one thin" is amazing and deals w/ some similar stuff. peace.
