alto has some good ideas there, mos def. also, there's a book by jerry coker called 'improvising jazz' that's good to get started and also has stuff for people that have been playing for a long time. very cool, well-tought-out, terse little book on playing jazz. the best i've come across IMHO. and actually fun to read. as for alto's suggestion for buying transcription books, get the omnibook. it's a no brainer. plus, it's got the harmonies written in there for ya so you can just shoot right to some ii-V's and get the master's shit! of course, get the recordings of them as well if you can. hearing them is key. peace.
