I'm not in my right mind
I work six days this week. Tonight is Thursday night. Two more days to go. Saturday at 6 pm, I'm going to be delerious with tiredness. Nonetheless, when 6 pm rolls around, I'm going to pack up my shit and drive to Marion, N.C., less than an hour away, and play a gig. At least it ends at midnight. A part of me thinks I'm too old for this shit. But another part of me thinks that playing music keeps me young. Both parts are probably full of shit.

Good for you, Doc! Consider the gig as a proper dessert for the work week you've put in from Mon.-Sat. And, you get paid for it.
Have fun, man.

Hang in there, Doc. In the meantime, cheer up. I just got off the phone with Shirley Manson. She said to say "hi."

Dr Dave, are you still flogging fine wines and spirits to the great unwashed??
That could drain you at the end of the week.
As Ron said, your gigs are dessert. You'll be doing what you clearly love to do. Lap it up greedily. Being able to do that, and get paid for it is sometimes difficult for some these days. Enjoy it kiddo. You'll get lots of time to sleep when you're dead.

Really. You've just discovered this aspect of your personality-diagnosis, Doc?
My good buddy, the late Jeffrey Frederick once answered this, when asked what what was the difference between country-western and rock and roll: Jeffrey said, "Country music is six guys in a stationwagon, driving 200 miles to play for $75. Rock and roll is what they do when they get there."

I think the sleep mention was probably the best advice. Hang in, DD, and don't forget to enjoy yourself. We like you in any of your minds.

Man remember when you first picked up that axe and wrapped your fingers around its neck, made some chords or runs, how your fingers hurt but you felt excited at the same time like you'd just found out a secret. Man that feeling never changes does it? Rock on

True enough.
Sleep deprivation is the absolute worst.
Desperately trying not to make a joke about Dr. Dave's parts being full of shit.

Thanks for asking. I'm all right, just tired. I'm lucky, lucky, lucky to be able to live this life. Left work yesterday to make an early gig at a brewery , then loaded out and rolled into Tressa's for a 10 pm to 1:30 am recital. Even Chuck was tired at the end of that one. Ruby Mayfield, our local heroine of the alto saxophone, basically finished his set for him.
I'm going to cut back my hours at the wine store; 47 is about 7 too many; the boss didn't like to hear it but tough.

We're now playing every Thursday at the French Broad Brewing Company, which is an odd place to play, but it's two hours 6-8, which is practically like doing a breakfast show. The big push is on now for Goombay, which is Asheville's big African-American Cultural Festival. We're the last band before the big evening headliner, which is ZAPP. See the schedule here.
I haven't played a festival gig in 30 years. I'm kinda nervous. But Chuck's been cool about putting on a strong hour set, and we have a few gigs between now and then to do the tighten-up. We have a new drummer, and Michael seems like a good guy.
Also, I'm finally on a 20-hour week at the wine store, which is a good thing, because the gigs are starting to pile up. Eight bookings in September already, and it looks like more to come. Nothing big--just the usual funky clubs (what other kind of place books a blues band?), but it's work, and it's somewhat regular.
Finally, Chuck has decided to ditch "Chuck Beattie and Blues By Design," which was a stupid name to start with, and just go out as The Chuck Beattie Band, which will get him and us more gigs in better places. We're adding a lot of Meters and Neville Brothers stuff to the repertoire, plus some early '60s R&B, and Z.Z. Hill stuff, and whatnot. Chuck says he's starting to write, and wants to go into the studio in the next 60 days. I'll believe that when it happens.
Anyway, that's the latest. For more, visit our often-out-of-date and completely amateurish website at Chuckbeattie.com

Played at a hippie festival last night "Tribal Revival." Booths selling tie-dyed shirts and candles. Bizarre. Tonight, Rosie's Cantina in Black Mountain, birthplace of Billy Graham. I'm going through another tedious phase of "Why am I doing this?" Short answer: Don't have to go to the ATM as often. Longer answer: Fun watching girls dance. Also, through sheer weight of gigs, becoming more proficient on the instrument. Catalogue arrived today: Schechter 8-string bass, $700. Should I? Naaah...well, maybe. Trying to write again. Will I be allowed to be successful playing rock music even though I'm 55? Probably not. Try anyway. Time to load up and go...

I say go for the Schechter 8-string bass.
Short answer to your self doubt. Go for it!! You only regret the things you had a chance to do and didn't.
