Wasilewski / Kurkiewicz / Miskiewicz - Trio

I was in a quandry today, holding Holland's Overtime in one hand and this CD in the other, knowing I only had enough money in my wallet for one or the other. This CD won out.

This group captivated me on Stanko's last couple releases (Soul of Things and Suspended Night): they play as one, with a quiet authority which belies their young ages. I found this CD to be rewarding for the same reasons. There's no bravado, and little sentimentality, just the emergence of beautiful music out of close listening and introspective intensity.

Bought them both yesterday. Only listened to the 1st tune on the Holland, but it didn't knock me out. Withholding judgment at this point.

Tomasz Stanko's band makes a record without him. On one level, it's, yeah, just another piano trio album. But something makes me keep playing it over, and over, and over. All three of these guys have such beautiful touch on their axes. The band reminds me of Bobo Stenson (I can't recommend a piano trio much higher than Bobo) but a little more aggressive. Thank you, Tomasz, for putting these guys out there for the world to hear.

I think the trio needs some vowels.

I love this record, and posted my appreciation here. (See the earlier thread, buried because the thread died young due to neglect.) I'll second you!

Yeah a lost of threads in this forum especially seem to be dying quickly at the moment; it's a pity. -- I don't know that I'm going to rush out to get this album, but they certainly made a lovely rhythm section on The Soul of Things.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say they are deserving of more credit for the sound sculpturing of Soul of Things and the subsequent Suspended Night than they are probably given or, at least, it always seemed pretty evident to me. Btw, Trio is actually their 5th album, I believe. The others have been issued under the group name of the Simple Acoustic Trio with labels Not Two and Gowi (I think?). Amazing to ponder that they've been making albums and playing with Stanko since they were in their mid-teens!

This is such a nice album. One of my favorites in my collection of ECM albums.
