Detroit Jazz Festival
Jazz festival to go beyond Hart Plaza
New locations will showcase Detroit's musical traditions.
The spirit of Detroit's rich musical legacy will reign during the 2005 Detroit International Jazz Festival Sept. 2-5, which this year will extend from its traditional core at Hart Plaza along Woodward Avenue to Campus Martius Park.
As gateway to the new performance and vendor spaces - and symbol of the festival's wider embrace - the first venue off Hart Plaza will be located adjacent to the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center and called the Spirit of Detroit Stage. It will spotlight "roots" musical styles associated with Detroit, such as blues, R&B, gospel and funk, and feature Detroit artists.
Plans for the Spirit of Detroit Stage, which will be complemented by another Motown roots venue, the Campus Martius Stage, were revealed Wednesday by festival director Frank Malfitano.
Detroit R&B and blues vocalists lined up for the two new stages include Thornetta Davis, Alberta Adams, Nathaniel Mayer, Betty LaVette and Sir Mack Rice.
Malfitano also announced a new gift "in the range of $100,000" from Bank One, J.P. Morgan, Chase to support the Spirit of Detroit Stage. That's the second largest single contribution after the $250,000 pledge from Mack Avenue Records, which stepped in when Ford Motor Co. ended its title sponsorship.
The 2005 festival, still offering free admission to all its stages, will operate on a budget of "a little over $1 million," Maliftano says.
Despite the traditional Motown, non-jazz orientation of the two new stages, Malfitano says the main venues at Hart Plaza will remain dedicated to jazz.
The Hart Plaza lineup features veteran stars such as pianists Dave Brubeck, McCoy Tyner, Randy Wilson and Les McCann, as well as saxophonist Ron Blake and his band. The festival opens informally Sept. 2 with a party at the Hard Rock Café, a parade by the New Orleans Regal Brass Band at Campus Martius and a concert on that stage spotlighting the Funk Brothers and David "Fathead" Newman's Tribute to Ray Charles.

I'm a little disappointed that so much R&B type stuff is finding its way in, but I'm a half full guy when it comes to free music festivals, not a half empty guy. I'll still be there and I'll still buy lots of food and drink and give my money (more or less) to the chess hustlers.

You'd think they might hire Organissimo!
At least we'll be able to hear them at Baker's next week.

I should come back out to Detroit just so I can meet Larry. One of the biggest regrets in my regretful life was not hooking up (I mean meeting) Larry when I was in Detroit a couple of years ago.

Come on out, Mary! Drinks for everyone, Al's buying!
Trying to sneak one past his old countryman,

Actually, I'm sort of counting on Al to put me up for a while.
This all ok with you, Al? If you don't answer within 2 minutes, I'll assume it's a "yes."

Sounds like a plan!
Al, remember: Bombay Sapphire, Noilly Prat dry vermouth, queen sized, pimento stuffed olives. I would prefer a mixing glass and a strainer, but I'll live with a shaken martini if absolutely necessary. I don't want to come across as demanding. As for Mary's requirements, I'm sure they'll be shortly forthcoming.

Thursday I'll be announce a very special giveaway for the festival.
We all came to the party late, but this is just the beginning of a long time association.
Best Lois
