Question Miles Davis sets in longbox format?

I don't think I'm seeing things... but aren't several of the Davis box sets being released in this "longbox" format? Which sets are??? (And aren't?) I just bought the "Complete Silent Way Sessions" in that format... and Seven Steps in a regular box....

I heard a rumor that these "longbox" editions are cheaper... (and the Silent Way set I got was abour $10 cheaper than the regular box)...

How is this so? It's the exact same material right? Isn't Columbia losing $$ doing this? How long we will see these?

Those longbox sets have been around for quite a while now and I'm not sure what the definitive answer is!

It appears to me that it IS the same material in less expensive packaging.

I would be interested in KNOWING for sure, though...

It's the exact same material, just different packaging.

But, for my money, I'll take the more expensive packaging. I really love the design of the metal spine boxes, and I hate the longbox format in general, since it doesn't really fit conveniently anywhere.

I've never had a problem with the metal spine boxes, extracting the cds or reading the notes. It would be a shame if Columbia abandoned that format, in my opinion.

My Charlie Parker Dial and Savoy box has the metal spine thing you're talking about. And while I have not had any particular problems with it, I don't care much for the design. Pulling the cds out can be somewhat tedious because they are hard to remove, and the last thing I want to do is break the damn sleeve!

I'm also not a huge fan of the long box. The only nice part about it the book that comes with it.

I used to avoid box sets when the individual albums were mostly available, since it's easier to replace a single damaged CD that way. Nothing's more traumatic to a collector than accidentally destroying one of the discs in a box set and having to re-purchase the entire thing.

Now, I make copies of all my CDs and never play the originals. This has paid off when I purchase a box set, as I can sell all the albums it replaces for maximium value, since they're in mint condition. I only have to deal with extricating the discs from the box when I make copies, then it gets safely filed away.

Jesus, brother.

I've got somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 cds and have only ever had to replace one due to damage.

What the hell are you doing with them? Using them like throwing stars? Coasters? Skeet shooting?

I've got closer to 5000. I suppose you've never knocked over a stack of CDs, had several pop out of their cases and at least one go skidding across a hardwood floor, which happens to have an ever so slightly raised nail-head? Drop one out of your car on concrete and see what happens to it. And then if you find out it's out of print, you'll pay dearly to replace it, if it can be replaced. Live dangerously with your property if you like, Scott, but I don't with mine.

Additionally, there were more complaints about the poor design of some box sets on another thread that I was just reading, so my remarks must seem more out of context here. Though they're bulkier to store, the long boxes actually provide safer and easier access to the individual discs than the spine packages.

I'm in the middle... ( close to 2000)... but I STRONGLY prefer the longbox... they are WAY cheaper...liner notes easier to read... and they store just fine... (I just place one longbox on top the other on top of the cd case....)

Dude, if I "lived dangerously" with my property, don't you think I would have had to replace more than just one out of a thousand cds by now?

But I can counter your quote by saying pay attention and take better care of your shit.

Never happened to me, either - and I have a hardwood floor, too.
Also, I don't take my CDs out of the house and into the car. I could see that as a problem, though.

After spending the first 1/2 of my music buying life with vinyl, I guess I just got to be pretty careful with my music discs (no matter WHAT they're made of).

BTW, remember when CDs first came out and the music industry was hyping them like crazy? One of their "great" selling points was how indestructible they were.

Yeah, until you got a scratch on one.

I agree, Brother Beefy, I think we handle our cds in a similar fashion. The one exception being that I DO play mine in my car.

Still, no problems.

Same here, and I only had that happen to me once, and luckily it was a CD that was widely available at the time. However, on the resale market, an honest re-seller should disclose even the slightest surface marks from handling, so any damage affects the value. The less handling of the master CD, the better, no matter how careful you are. Accidents will happen!

It happened once and now you're making copies of every cd you buy so you don't have to play the original?

Good lord, Groover.

You realize that's bordering on paranoia?

If you say so, buddy, and I appreciate your sincere concern. I never really know which ones I might resell, since there always seems to be a newly remastered version with extra tracks coming out, or a box set that completely overlaps the content. Not that that's a bad thing, but would you pay as much for an open copy with surface scratches as you would for a sealed copy?

Also, I'm always bringing new selections to my office to listen to while working. I can leave copies there overnight and not worry too much if they disappear after the cleaning crew comes through. Items have disappeared from our offices before. I don't think it really counts as paranoia if someone really is out to get you, just intelligent caution.

If I transported my CDs as much as Groover, I would probably make copies, too. Mine just stay at home.

As it is now, if I want to take tunes "on the road" I'll make MP3's and put them on my Archos player.

The office thing I can definitely understand.

And to answer your question, I don't buy used cds.
