The Henry Grimes Trio featuring Andrew Lamb and Newman Taylor Baker was
designated "Best Jazz Trio of the Year" by NYPress in its "Best of
Manhattan" issue in 'O4. Editor Steven Psyllos wrote, "Henry Grimes plays
the bass with absolute control, spinning tales without words, enriching the
room with the depth of his bass. Newman Taylor Baker can capture any rhythm and will surprise you two or three times each show with how far he can take percussion. And Andrew Lamb works his saxophone and flute, paying close attention to the silence between the sounds, layering. When you see this trio listed ... stop what you're doing."

So... stop what you're doing, and please be with us!

<< >< > <> <>< > >< >

I think most everyone's already read Henry's bio, so here are bios for the
other musicians on the tour:

ANDREW LAMB (saxophones, flutes) was born in Clinton, North Carolina and
grew up in Chicago and in South Jamaica, Queens. Having studied with AACM
charter member Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre, Mr. Lamb came into the City's
"avant-garde" community in the '7Os, becoming an active presence in the
vibrant Bedford-Stuyvesant arts world at that time, and winning a Brooklyn
Arts Council grant. In 1994, he got the chance to lead a session for
Delmark; he composed all the pieces on "Portrait in the Mist," which
featured a backing unit of vibraphonist Warren Smith, bassist Wilber Morris,
and drummer Andrei Strobert. Andrew Lamb has since recorded duets with
Warren Smith ("Duet," WISland, '99) and "Dance of the Prophet," made a trio
recording with Eugene Cooper and Andrei Strobert (Kiki Records), and in
2OO3 released "Pilgrimage" on CIMP with Tom Abbs and Andrei Strobert; his
latest release, with his group The Moving Form, is "Year of the Endless
Moment" (Engine Studios). Andrew Lamb and his ensembles remain a regular
presence in the New York area and have frequently played in the annual
Vision Festival, which began in 1996. In 2OO1, Andrew took part in Alan
Silva's big-band project called the Sound Visions Orchestra; the following
year he toured with AACM-affiliated drummer Alvin Fielder. This year,
Andrew has played in Henry Grimes's trio with Newman Taylor Baker in Berlin
and in the Henry Grimes Quartet with Marshall Allen and Hamid Drake in the
1Oth annual Vision Festival. Always, Andrew Lamb's music rises out of the
African-American jazz, blues and church traditions and is deeply spiritual,
profoundly emotional, and readily accessible to all who hear him. Wrote
Steven Loewy for "All Music Guide," Andrew Lamb is "a serious musician
seeking to uplift his soul through art, and, like John Coltrane and his
progeny, Lamb's vehicle is the psalm-like expression of his tenor saxophone.
The results reflect his quest, testifying to his musical abilities, enormous
potential, and depth of character."

Virginia native NEWMAN TAYLOR BAKER (playing drums Oct. 22nd and 23rd),
termed a "ceaselessly resourceful percussionist" by "Village Voice" writer
Nat Hentoff, has long worked to bridge traditional African talking drum and
Western European tympani, creating a diatonically tuned enhanced drum set
that allows him to develop original compositions in a broad range of
musical expressions. As a young man he studied composition and percussion,
receiving a B.S. degree in Music Education from Virginia State U. and an
M.M. from East Carolina U. Newman has played and toured in over 4O
countries worldwide with Billy Bang, Kenny Barron, Bobby Bradford, Henry
Grimes, Billy Harper, Eddie Henderson, Joe Henderson, Fred Hopkins and
Diedre Murray, Ahmad Jamal, Leroy Jenkins, Jeanne Lee, James Moody, Dewey
Redman, Sam Rivers, Henry Threadgill, McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, the
Delaware and Richmond Symphonies, and more. Meanwhile, Newman is also a
dedicated educator of long standing, noted for his work with the Avodah
Dance Ensemble's Education Programs and with Mickey D. and Friends Dance
Company. Other projects include Celebration of the Drum Set: Give the
Drummer Some (Warwick, NY Summer Arts Festival), the Congolese Missa Luba (St. Andrew and Matthew Church, Wilmington, DE), The 3 Willies (music by Leroy Jenkins, libretto by Homer Jackson), Dialogue for 2OOO: A Duet for Drum Set (Whitney Museum of American Art), the Obie award-winning Running Man (music by Diedre Murray, text by Cornelius Eady), and Walcott Songs (music by Henry Threadgill, text by Derek Walcott). Newman is the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in composition for his project Singin' Drums. He teaches privately, is a lecturer at Rutgers U. in Newark, works with Young Audiences / New York, Arts Horizons, Arts Genesis, Friends of the Arts, and Jazzmobile, and serves on the Board of the Williamsburgh Music Center in Brooklyn. About Newman's playing, Rich Scheinin advises in his liner notes for Billy Harper's recording "If Our Hearts Could Only See" (DIW), "Listen to the sparks, the effortless swing. With a single ping on a cymbal, he moves the music into a groove that's wide enough for a listener to lie down inside it."

Chicago master drummer / percussionist *AVREEAYL RA (playing drums Oct.
25th and 28th) was born in Chicago in 1947 and still lives there today.
He is a renowned musician always in demand by visiting jazz artists in
Chicago. Avreeayl's father, a tenor saxophonist, was mentor to many young
Chicago musicians, including John Gilmore, later the mainstay of Sun Ra's
Arkestra; Avreeayl's father played in one of Sun Ra's early Chicago bands,
and Sun Ra played in one of his groups as well. Avreeayl is a long-term
member of the Chicago AACM, his relationship with the seminal music
organization having begun with early studies with AACM co-founder Kelan
Philip Cohran. Avreeayl has performed and /or recorded with Fred Anderson,
Amiri Baraka, Fontella Bass, Lester Bowie, Ari Brown, Oscar Brown, Jr.,
Henry Butler, Henry Byrd ("Professor Longhair"), Hamid Drake, Malachi
Favors, Donald Raphael Garrett, Charles Gayle, Henry Grimes, Billy Harper,
Joseph Jarman, Edward "Kidd" Jordan, Nicole Mitchell, Sun Ra, Pharoah
Sanders, Malachi Thompson, and many more. The venerable "Chicago Tribune" music critic Howard Reich wrote recently, "An indispensable Chicago
innovator, Avreeayl Ra shapes the music-making swirling around him with
remarkable precision and poise... extraordinarily sensitive percussion."
John Kelman of IndieJazz.com has described Avreeayl's playing as "part Tony
Williams, part Elvin Jones, and all Avreeayl Ra." And John Litweiler in "The
Chicago Sun-Times": "He supplies ingenious sound colors and textures."
Avreeayl considers himself greatly blessed to have come up in the richly
progressive Chicago "avant-garde" jazz community. Though he has lived
briefly in New Orleans and New York and has toured widely in the U.S.,
Canada, Europe, the Far East, and Africa, he has always returned home to
live in Chicago. Besides playing and recording music, these days Avreeayl
devotes much of his time and phenomenal energy to documenting on film the
hidden roots of Chicago music, focusing on the Congo Beach Initiative (which
was inspired by Congo Beach in New Orleans), a drum- and spirit-centered
society in which Chicago musicians, dancers, and artists of all
descriptions, young and elders alike, have congregated for many years at
63rd Street and Lakefront, playing music and practicing their spiritual and
healing arts throughout the night, while developing an undying, evolving,
spontaneous, organic communal life based in the rhythms, sounds, images, and spirituality of the African-American soul. Avreeayl is also documenting the
Chicago jazz community, in particular life stories of the elders in the
music. And another project is the study and documentation of modalities for
healing and spiritual balance both inside and outside the music.

P.S. from Vision Festival producer Patricia Nicholson Parker:

"Henry Grimes is a very special gift to this scene. He plays with so much
dedication and gentleness in his music. The group with Andrew Lamb and
Newman Taylor-Baker under Henry's leadership is filled with freedom and zest
and enthusiasm and great music. You really can hear the special voice of
each musician. They give each other all the space and yet all the fullness
of sound. It is wonderful to hear."

From "The Village Voice," 6/13/O5: "The phone rang shortly after I put on Spiritual Unity’s self-titled CD for the first time. And recognizing track two as Albert Ayler’s 'Spirits' from the next room, I thought for a moment there that I was hearing a tenor saxophone — it was Marc Ribot on guitar, heavy on the tremolo... Leaving out the saxophone works in Spiritual Unity’s favor: Ribot, trumpeter Roy Campbell, drummer Chad Taylor, and back-from-oblivion bassist Henry Grimes are going for Ayler’s essence, not his sound, and invidious comparisons are avoided. Turning cowboy on 'Bells', Ribot sounds like he’s thinking about his darling Clementine rather than Ayler’s holy ghost, a lovely, reflective moment before the crash-bang ending. More than just lending a touch of authenticity, Grimes’s powerful bowing keeps everyone on an even keel as they switch from Slug’s-era lurch to square dance to (I swear) polka. Taylor dances nimbly on his cymbals, and the criminally underrated Campbell is his usual puckish self. Spirits rejoice! Just what we needed to complete the long overdue Albert Ayler renaissance." –- Francis Davis.

Henry Grimes appearances, Sept., '09

Sorry for the long delay in posting...

THE JEMEEL MOONDOC QUARTET
with
JEMEEL MOONDOC, alto saxophone
HENRY GRIMES, violin and acoustic bass
CONNIE CROTHERS, piano
CHAD TAYLOR, drums

at the Stone, northwest corner of Ave. C & East 2nd St., New York City,
Saturday, Sept. 19th, ‘O9 at 8 and 1O p.m.

* * * * *

On Saturday, September 19th, ‘O9, the Jemeel Moondoc Quartet, featuring Connie Crothers (piano), Henry Grimes (acoustic bass, violin) and Chad Taylor (drums), will present new music at The Stone, Avenue C and East 2nd St., New York City, thestonenyc.com, nycthestone [@] yahoo.com (no telephone). Sets will be at 8 and 1O p.m, tickets $15 per set, available at the door (half-price for students; children under 1O admitted free). The nearest subway stops are the F or V train to Second Ave., the F train to Delancey St., or the J/ M/ Z train to Essex St.

A powerful and vastly underrated “avant-garde” alto saxophonist, JEMEEL MOONDOC began playing piano as a child, studied clarinet and flute, and settled on alto around age 16; he subsequently studied with Cecil Taylor at various colleges in the early ‘7Os. In 1972, he moved to New York, where he formed Ensemble Muntu with trumpeter Roy Campbell, bassist William Parker, and drummer Rashid Baker. The group recorded for its own Muntu label in the late ‘7Os, and Moondoc also led solo sessions for labels such as Soul Note and Cadence through the early ‘8Os. However, financial difficulties forced Moondoc to break up his large ensemble (the Jus Grew Orchestra) and essentially retire from music for over a decade, working as an architect’s assistant. Moondoc’s career was revived in the mid-’9Os when the Eremite label coaxed him into signing a record contract. In 1996, Moondoc recorded his first albums in 11 years: the studio trio date “Tri-P-Let” and the live “Fire in the Valley” (performed at the festival of the same name). 1998 brought “New World Pygmies,” a duo with William Parker from that year’s Fire in the Valley Festival. Next, Moondoc revived his Jus Grew Orchestra as a ten-piece ensemble and performed a set of Massachusetts concerts documented on 2OO1’s “Spirit House.” Also released that year was “Revolt of the Negro Lawn Jockeys,” a quintet performance from the 2OOO Vision Festival that was acclaimed as perhaps his finest album to date. For more information about Jemeel Moondoc:

CONNIE CROTHERS (pianist) is known for her wide range of expression and uncompromising improvisation. After attending the University of California at Berkeley, she moved to New York in 1962 to study with Lennie Tristano, who presented her in solo and quartet concerts at Carnegie Recital Hall. She co-led an engagement with Warne Marsh at the Village Vanguard with bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Peter Scattaretico. Connie co-led a quartet with Lenny Popkin, tenor saxophone, featuring bassist Cameron Brown and drummer Carol Tristano, touring Europe and Canada and appearing at the Blue Note, Sweet Basil, Birdland, and the Spoleto Festival. Her solo performances include a set at the Vision Festival, Merkin Concert Hall, Northamp ton Center for the Arts, Berlin Jazztage, Cooper Union, New Music America Festival, DuMaurier International Jazz Festival, and Middleheim Festival. In 1982, she recorded “Swish” in duo with Max Roach and co-led an engagement with Roach and dancers Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Later, she performed in duo with Roach in Bologna, Italy and at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, in Tokyo, and at Harvard University, where she was co-honored as Visiting Jazz Artist. With Jemeel Moondoc, Connie performed at the Vision Festival, Tonic, Hallwalls in Buffalo, and at The Stone with Jemeel Moondoc and Henry Grimes. She currently performs with her own quartet, featuring alto saxophonist Richard Tabnik, drummer Roger Mancuso, and bassist Ken Filiano; the quartet has appeared in NYC at Birdland, Brecht Forum, the Rhythm in the Kitchen Festival, “Cooler in the Shade,” and at The Outpost Performance Space in Albuquerque, NM, with poet Mark Weber. Roulette presented her duo with electroacoustic improviser and composer Ben Manley, as well as in duo with Kevin Norton. She appeared at Brecht Forum with a newly formed trio, TranceFormations, with singer Andrea Wolper and Ken Filiano, and in duo at The Stone with clarinetist Bill Payne. Her most recent CD, with Payne. Many of her recordings have appeared on critics’ “1O best” lists. Marian McPartland featured Connie on her NPR radio series “Piano Jazz.” Further information: conniecrothers.net,conniecrothers [@] aol.com>.

HENRY GRIMES has played more than 33O concerts in 23 countries (including many festivals) since May of ‘O3, when he made his astonishing return to the music world after 35 years away. He was born and raised in Philadelphia and attended Juilliard, and in the ‘5O’s and ‘6O’s, he played and toured with Willis “Gator Tail” Jackson, “Bullmoose” Jackson, “Little” Willie John, and other great R&B / soul musicians. But drawn to jazz, Henry went on to play, tour, and record with Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Haynes, Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Sonny Rollins, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, McCoy Tyner, and more. Sadly, a trip to the West Coast to work with Al Jarreau and Jon Hendricks went awry, leaving Henry in Los Angeles at the end of the ‘6O’s with a broken bass he couldn’t pay to repair, so he sold it for a small sum and faded away from the music world. He was rediscovered by a Georgia social worker and fan in 2OO2 and was given a bass by William Parker, and Henry made a triumphant return to the music world in 2OO3. Since then, he has played, toured, and / or recorded with Rashied Ali, Marshall Allen, Fred Anderson, Marilyn Crispell, Ted Curson, Andrew Cyrille, Bill Dixon, Dave Douglas, Andrew Lamb, David Murray, William Parker, Marc Ribot, Cecil Taylor, and more. Henry Grimes has also made his professional debut on a second instrument (the violin) at the age of 7O, has published the first volume of his poetry, “Signs Along the Road,” and has been creating illustrations to accompany his new recordings and publications. He can be heard on 85 recordings on various labels, including Atlantic, Ayler Records, Blue Note, Columbia, ESP-Disk, ILK Music, Impulse!, JazzNewYork Productions, Pi Recordings, Porter Records, Prestige, Riverside, and Verve. Henry Grimes now lives and teaches in New York City. More information: henrygrimes.com,

CHAD TAYLOR (drums, vibraphone) has played professionally in Chicago since he was 14 years old. In 1991, he moved to New York and played with Lou Donaldson, Leon Parker, Junior Mance, and Mark Turner, helped form the free-improvisational group the Life Ensemble in 1993, and returned home in 1996 to help develop the Chicago Underground Orchestra. Since then, he has also played with Fred Anderson, Derek Bailey, David Boykin, Bobby Bradford, Peter Brotzmann, Rob Brown, Roy Campbell, Daniel Carter, Eugene Chadbourne, Cooper-Moore, Ernest Dawkins, Malachi Favors, Henry Grimes, Leroy Jenkins, Joe Maneri, Rob Mazurek, Joe McPhee, Roscoe Mitchell, Jemeel Moondoc, Marc Ribot, Steve Swell, John Zorn, Marc Ribot, and many other extraordinary improvisers. Chad is also part of Chicago’s post-rock scene, recording / playing with Tortoise, Isotope 217, StereoLab, Brokeback, Mouse on Mars, Sam Prekop, and Jim O’Rourke. At present, Chad is a member2Oof the Jemeel Moondoc Quartet (with Connie Crothers and Henry Grimes); the Chicago Underground Duo, Trio, Quartet, & Orchestra; Digital Primitives (with Cooper-Moore and Assif Tsahar); Circle Down (with Angelica Sanchez and Chris Lightcap); the Fred Anderson Trio (with Tatsu Aoki); Sunship (with Mary Halvorson, Marc Ribot and Jason Ajemian); Triptych Myt h (with Cooper-Moore and Tom Abbs); Sticks and Stones (with Joshua Abrams and Matana Roberts); Active Ingredients (with Steve Swell, Tom Abbs, and Jemeel Moondoc); Jeff Parker Trio (with Chris Lopes); Marc Ribot trio (with Henry Grimes); Day Dreams (with Jason Ajemian, Tony Malaby, Rob Mazurek, and Jeff Parker); Sonic Projections (with Nicole Mitchell, Craig Taborn, and David Boykin); Rob Mazurek’s Exploding Star Orchestra; and the Francis Wong trio (with Tatsu Aoki). Henry Grimes appearances

GRIMES TIMES !! HENRY GRIMES TIMES !!

http://www.henrygrimes.com/ musicmargaret@earthlink.net/ 212-841-O899

2OO9 year-end report

Henry Grimes asked me to send out this short year-end report at the dawn of his 75th-birthday year. He wants you to know that the year 2OO9 was wonderful for him, even though it was painful to lose several loved ones, and some hard-won contracts and commitments for concerts and tours were cancelled (or to use a more hopeful word, postponed) due to the worldwide financial crisis.

But just to mention a few Henry Grimes highlights in 2OO9, his first concert of the year was a solo bass performance at the United Nations in New York City as a fund-raiser for the Deep Tones for Peace project, which came to fruition in April with the participation of fellow bassists Thierry Barbe (France), Mark Dresser (USA), Trevor Dunn (USA), Irina-Kalina Goudeva (Bulgaria/ Denmark), Lindsey Horner (USA), James Ilgenfritz (USA), J.C. Jones (Israel), Michael Klinghoffer (Israel), Chi Chi Nwanoku (UK), William Parker (USA), Barre Phillips (USA/France), David Phillips (USA), Rufus Reid (USA), and Bertram Turetzky (USA), all alternating solos, duos, and ensemble pieces.

Shortly afterwards, Henry was in residency with the great Rashied Ali at Hamilton College of Performing Arts, and then the two played a duo concert at Rutgers University at Camden, which was recorded and will be released as “Spirits Aloft” on the wonderful Porter Records label in 2O1O. This residency was followed by a double Henry Grimes residency at Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory in Boston. These experiences gave Henry the opportunity to work with young musicians, one of the greatest joys in his life.

Another highlight in this period was Henry’s stunning duo performance with Amiri Baraka at Issue Project Room in Brooklyn, and not long after that, Henry was in Chicago playing three concerts in celebration of the great Fred Anderson’s 8Oth birthday, where Henry shared the bandstand with Fred, Hamiet Bluiett, Edward “Kidd” Jordan, and a host of Chicago’s master musicians in various combinations over the three nights. Henry can be seen and heard as "special guest" on the Fred Anderson DVD "21st Century Chase" filmed and recorded on Fred's actual 8Oth birthday, March 22nd (Delmark DVD 1589).

Returning home, another highlight for Henry was playing bass and violin in duo with Marc Ribot -- both musicians completely unplugged! -- at the beautiful Rubin Museum of (Tibetan) Art.

In the second quarter of the year, Henry enjoyed presenting his 15-year-old protégé Leo Lindberg (from Stockholm) in three New York concerts. Then Henry rejoined his bandmates Andrew Cyrille and Paul Dunmall in the mighty co-leader Profound Sound Trio at the Cheltenham (U.K.) Jazz Festival, where Henry also had the rare pleasure of hearing the great Hugh Masekela, who was also playing in the festival, and despite the fact that Mr. Masekela’s band members were stuck at a faraway airport and he had to gather up a group of musicians in England and put his concert together in makeshift fashion, Mr. Masekela held the entire audience in the palm of his hand for more than two hours with an exquisite combination of grit, wit, showmanship, and the heights of musical artistry. What an inspiration! If anyone tries to tell you that the giants of our music no longer walk the earth, etc., etc. (we've all heard this nonsense before), you'll be able to come right back with a long list that can start right off with Mr. Hugh Masekela.

When Henry Grimes returned home again, New York City was ablaze with Marc Ribot’s 55th birthday retrospective concerts, which were going on all over town, and Henry was delighted to play in two of them. The last day of May, Henry and Andrew Cyrille, facing a very attentive and appreciative audience of more than 2,OOO people, played a brilliant duo set in the Bang on a Can marathon. And June is, of course, Vision Festival time, and Henry played in a Marshall Allen-led quintet, and also had his own solo set (bass, violin, poetry), and also played lead violin in Jason Hwang’s Spontaneous River, a 35-piece string orchestra (plus one drummer). In between, Henry took a day trip to Penn State University to play a solo feature in the International Society of Bassists convention and came home again to New York City to play duets with the great Bobby Bradford, followed by two more duos with Henry and Rashied Ali, one at Middle Collegiate Church in Manhattan and one in the West Oak Lane Festival in Philadelphia.

Things quieted down during the summer, which was mostly devoted to preparing two new Henry Grimes CD’s for release and organizing things for the fall. The terrible news came that Rashied Ali, one of Henry’s closest musical brothers, left this life in mid-August during treatment for a heart condition, truly a grievous loss for all who knew him, and equally so for the entire music world.

Henry’s September began with a solo radio show and concert in Ann Arbor, followed by another set of three wonderful nights in Chicago with Muhal Richard Abrams, Fred Anderson, Harrison Bankhead, Hamid Drake, Douglas Ewart, Edward “Kidd” Jordan, Oliver Lake, and Dushun Mosley in various combinations, and Henry playing throughout in these Chicago Jazz Festival after-sets at the Velvet Lounge. Back in New York again, one of Henry's trios played a fund-raiser for Harlem Textile Works at the Black Box Theater in Harlem, and a few nights later Henry played in a quartet with Jemeel Moondoc, Connie Crothers, and Chad Taylor downtown at the Stone.

October found Henry playing 75th-birthday concerts for Amiri Baraka in Newark and at the Schomburg Center in Harlem, and playing and speaking in a very moving Rashied Ali memorial celebration that included the music of Amin and Muhammad Ali (Rashied’s son and brother), Ronnie Burrage, Dave Burrell, Charlie Ellerbee, Cornell Rochester, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, G. Calvin Weston, and many more. "The healing force of the universe" touched everyone at the Clef Club of Philadelphia that day, and no doubt extended far beyond.

In November, Henry Grimes and many others, including Steve Buscemi, Anthony Coleman, Loren Connors, Kimiko Hahn, Shelley Hirsch, Jonathan Kane, Joan LaBarbara, Aki Onda, Zeena Parkins, Ikue Mori, Marc Ribot, Anne Waldman, Kenny Wollesen, and around 5O more, celebrated the heroic life and work of the late Suzanne Fiol at St. Ann's Church and Issue Project Room in Brooklyn, and Henry played violin as he marched in the musicians' parade through the streets of Brooklyn from the church to IPR. Suzanne died after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was a great spirit, unforgettable, irreplaceable, a shining inspiration still and always, even though she’s gone.

And finishing up the year, the Profound Sound Trio played eight dates in seven cities in the U.K. at the end of November to packed houses and standing ovations -- such a beautiful feeling!
